Thoughts on Uplighting

I am getting married in a small venue right on the water. We are going to put up string lights etc. The walls are windows on three sides so there is beautiful natural lighting. My question is do we still need uplighting? I got a quote for $500 and would like to skip this but Im afraid the space wont be inviting for dancing, etc. if I dont have uplights. Any input would be appreciated!

How would the space not be inviting for dancing without uplights? I've actually never been to a reception with uplights and I always dance. What makes it inviting for dancing is having a sizable dance floor per number of guests and good band or dj. The only reason we're getting uplights is because we scored an amazing deal on them, otherwise we'd be without. If you'd rather save the money then skip them. No one will notice if they aren't there unless you himmed and hawed this over with a bunch of people before nixing them.

  • I think uplighting is one of those things that is great if you have the money for it, but if you don't, don't worry about it.  It wasn't in our budget and our venue still looked fine without it.
  • Uplight definitely looks pretty but is one of the least necessary additions to your reception.  As long as you have appropriate lighting for your guests to see and dance, no one's going to miss it :)

I recently attended a wedding, and the next day my friend said to me "What did you think about the uplighting?"  I hadn't even noticed that there was uplighting.  Especially with three walls of windows, I think this is something you can easily skip.  Nobody is going to come to you later and say "Your wedding was so beautiful, but I can't believe you didn't have uplighting."
  • Our venue had two walls of windows, and we did do uplighting. We definitely could have skipped it and no one would have noticed, especially with all the natural light. If you want to spend the money on it, it won't hurt. But it's definitely not necessary with all the light you've got, and it will still be inviting without uplighting.
