Table 13?

Ok so we were working on the seating chart (ugh!) and the venue does not have a table 13. We are allowed to change table numbers if we want. FI and I don't care about having table 13, and I would like to since we are doing some things that involve the numbers (having pictures of us at that age, guests writing notes for us to read on anniversaries). My dad does not want a table 13. Do your venues have a table 13?  Are you skipping it?

Re: Table 13?

  • I think it's just silly and superstititious to skip it.  I won't need that many tables, but if I did, I would go in numerical order, including 13

  • I think it's silly to avoid a table 13. I kinda understand the whole no floor 13 thing but still think it's odd (it's still the 13th floor no matter what you call it!). We will have a table 13 and won't think twice about it personally.

  • This is yet another one of those questions that never, ever occurred to me when I planned my wedding.  I had 13 tables total.  As far as I know, everyone is alive and well.
  • Funny you just brought this up.  We just had 2 people cancel, which changed out entire table count to 13, and our adult guest count to 113.  I pointed it out to my fiance today and we both laughed about it... I'm sure it will be fine.
  • We had 14 tables and yes one of them was table 13.

I think not having a table 13 is just as silly has not having a floor 13.  Like a PP touched on.. just because it's not called table or floor 13 there still is a 13th table/floor

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Tricky. I've heard stories of guests complaining their table number was too high. They're #1 so they want to be at Table #1! So I'd name tables instead of numbering them.

But I like the photo idea, and you seem to have guests with a different set of silly preoccupations. Actually, that's the first issue. Is this just your father, or are your guests like him? If it's just your father, I'd not worry about it. Would telling your father Harry Truman thought 13 was lucky help? 13 original States, and I guess it was a lucky day in his life. If it's your guests too, could 13 be the head table? Could there be a table of another shape [I've seen lovely pictures of weddings with some round and some rectangular tables] so it's "Table 12 and 13"?

But mostly I'd not worry about. Sit your most rational friends and Truman fans at 13.
  • This is seriously the first time I have ever heard of this.  I think it is a bit ridiculous.

    This.
  • I've never heard or thought about this before either...we only had 10 tables, but if we had more than that I would've had a table #13. I don't see it as a big deal personally. I LOVE the picture idea also!

  • I am also doing pictures of us at each age for the tables and am planning on a table 13 (even though those were some awkward picture years, lol). I honestly didn't even think about it until I saw this thread. I agree with PP just make sure to sit friends/family there who you know won't have an issue with it.

  • My FI and I met on the 13th of June, are getting married on the 13th.  I think our sweetheart table will probably be #13.  In other words, 13 is my lucky number.  Been my favorite since I was in 3rd grade.  I wouldn't worry about it.
