Wedding Reception Forum

Re: .

  • FFIL and his wife have been bitching about the wedding being in Vegas, but since they're the only parents who haven't contributed a cent (the cost is pretty evenly split between my dad, my stepdad, and me, and FMIL is kicking in a little bit), they get to just show up where and when we tell them to, like any other guest.

What other activities do you want them to attend?  Our parents aren't attending anything until the rehearsal.  If you're expecting anyone except your FI--including parents and attendants--to attend things like tastings, fittings, or scouting appointments, you should probably reconsider.  Anyone else who CHOOSES to attend these things is fine, but the only people who HAVE to be there are you and your FI.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • Dammit, should have quoted that one.  Summary: OP and her FI are from the same town but moved about an hour and a half away and want to do the wedding where they currently live.  FI's parents aren't thrilled about it.

Aerin, you should know by now, if you're the first in, you get the JIC quote out of the way first, THEN dispense the advice, lol.

And judging from the first advice you gave, it sounds like OP wanted the parents to be at more than just the wedding? What else do you need to go to besides that aside from maybe the RD?

Since I don't know for sure, I can only say that the only thing people need to go to, is the actual wedding.

My mom and grandma did all the dress-shopping stuff with me (Their choice, I would have gone by myself if nobody was available), and all of our vendor meetings where either DH and I, with my mom occasionally tagging along. We didn't need anybody else, because it was our wedding, and our money. So we didn't want 7 different people "helping" us choosings napkin colors and cake flavors.

My RD was very small, consisted of the WP (Which included all of the siblings) and the parents that we lived with growing up ... and our RD was very informal (Ran through the rehearsal and then took everybody to the Five Guys down the road). The other parents were at just the wedding. And everybody was happy with this arrangement.

If you fire a WP member, you're against America.

  • I know, I fail.  It was already deleted once I hit "Post."

She mentioned that she wanted them to attend "several" things, so I can only assume that goes beyond the RD and possibly a shower.  Personally, I don't have any family local to either me or the wedding, and FI's only local relative is his dad.  The only ones who've tagged along for any wedding stuff are my MOH and another BM.
