Timeline - cake cutting... do people leave?

I'm trying to come up with a timeline and I like getting all the toasts, intros, cake cutting out of the way and then dancing and taking a quick break for garter/boquet toss. I thought maybe do the cake right after dinner and then start dancing. Do you think people would start leaving right after the cake? Technically speaking it means the party is over... I've always waited for the cake to be cut and then leave shortly after at weddings I've attended.

Re: Timeline - cake cutting... do people leave?

  • You must not go to very fun weddings! Some of the older individuals might leave, because a lot of them simply wait for the cake. However, we are going to do ours earlier in the night simply because i don't want to stop everyone after they are out on the dance floor just to watch me cut cake.

  • I am probably doing cake cutting shortly after dinner.  If people want to leave so be it, but I'll be still out there dancing my butt off!

    Anniversary
  • I didn't mean EVERY wedding I leave after cake lol but some I have done that for quite a few. I was never into weddings until I wanted to get married : )

Sounds like this is a pretty common thing so I'll go ahead and go with it. Thanks

  • we're cutting the cake when we enter the reception space..it will be served right after dinner for dessert...

After the cake was cut people still stuck around...but we're having a late night snack & once those are distributed it is kinda like the last call hour because the reception ends at 11pm
  • We're cutting the cake early so that the cupcakes can be boxed and served with desert. Then we'll have the bulk of the recption after. Then we are having them bring out sliders, fries, and chocolate milk in the last hour, that will be the cue to start getting ready to leave.

  • Wow, it's really sad that so many people at the weddings you go to always leave right after cake!!

We are cutting cake soon after we make our entrance.  Our contract includes really fun plate decorating/mousse/berries on each slice of cake, so it will take the kitchen a fair amount of time to get this done. They are even going to use paintbrushes to paint some fun purple designs on the cake plates - so excited about this!! But yea, cutting always takes more time than people think it will, so I would cut before dinner if you can.  Also, this way everyone will be watching, and the cake can actually be served immediately following dinner.
  • We're probably cutting our cake right after dinner. Every wedding I've been to- the cake gets cut after dinner and people stay all night, dancing!!
