Lunch Reception Meals

We booked our venue space last week. They offer catering, but we can also bring in other catering from outside for an extra fee ($100). Originally we were looking at their menu and thinking how easy it would be just since it's prepared right there, we save the $100 fee, etc. I've recently spoken with person organizing everything and found out that you can only choose one entree for an entire group. We were origally thinking of offering at least 2. After finding this out, I took a second look at the menu. There is an option for a soup and sandwich meal but im not sure that's the vibe i wanted to go for. we're havign a vintage style wedding in a century court house and hall. however, it is lunch reception and those are more "lunchy" foods. FI and I are both foodies and we were looking forward to a delicious meal on our wedding that we and our guests will heartily enjoy.

I think that the option of one entree for the whole group (ie: roast beef) is out of the running. i dont want to force my guests to eat something they don't like. is the soup/sandwich think going to have the same vibe to it? i mean, i love seafood chowder personally, but i was kind of hoping for something elegant and im not sure of soup/sandwiches give out that vibe. thoughts?

Edit: Oh, by the way - as i mentioned, we do have the option of going with an outside caterer. It would cost us about an extra $1,000 or so....

Re: Lunch Reception Meals

  • I'd take a better look at some of the outside caterers. There's nothing wrong with soup and a sandwich if you're going for a quick casual vibe, but it doesn't sound like the "elegant" meal that two foodies would want to serve!
  • I would totally go with an outside caterer.  The venue caterer sounds boring.  Really awesome food would be something I'd require.
  • Ok is there a $100 or $1000 charge (both are in your post), because that makes a big difference!

Either way though, if you find a caterer that isn't too expensive, and maybe work on a less expensive (but still delicious) menu using local ingredients etc, I think the extra little bit would be worth it.
I'm a foody too, but when I go to weddings I'm there to enjoy the company and see my friends/family on this great day, not chow down on a free meal and then complain about how "it just SO wasn't in the vibe, like, you know?" So if you have to, then you have to.

...serve really fancy little cakes for dessert? Make the waiters wear fancy (re: silly) hats? Compensate with decor?
