Black and Silver Wedding, what's the accent color?

My wedding will be Old Hollywood Glamour meets NY.  I really wanted midnight blue and silver, but my finace wants to wear a black tux, that doesn't really go well with dark blue.  So I thought black and silver, but I don't know if I'm crazy about red being the accent, but I feel black and silver needs another color.  Does red, black and silver seem cliche?  What about a blue, obviously brighter than midnight, like royal  or periwinkle

Old Hollywood Glamour meets NY? I dunno... I mean, we're talking about completely different cities, different time periods, different attitude...
I think a blue would be good... royal, though, NOT periwinkle.

  • I love red, black and silver. Maybe a deep purple as well. I'm not crazy about a lighter shade of blue- a darker shade would be best.

  • We did red, black, and silver. Pics in bio.

You can use navy blue and still have the groom in a black tux.

You really could use any color at all with black and silver.  If you're going old hollywood though, I'd think red personally.

  • I agree i think blue would still be just fine with black & silver
  • A black tux is neutral.  It goes with anything, and you don't need to dress to match the tablecloths.  Most brides wear white, but that doesn't mean that they identify white as one of their wedding colors.

I'm also not sure how Old Hollywould can meet New York.  So you're having a Chicago wedding?

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • i just can't see navy with black, it usually looks like someone got dressed in the dark and didn't realize they put on blue.  I just don't like the combination.  I do like red with black and silver, but is it cliche?  Every Hollywood Glamour wedding site lists those colors, those films were in black and white, so there is so much room for interpretation since we really don't know what colors they were wearing.  Maybe royal could be the one, we shall see

As for the Old Hollywood Glam meets NY theme, I am a New Yorker, the wedding will be in NY and the skyline will be our backdrop.  Many Old Hollywood films are actually set in NY, think  Breakfast at Tiffanys, one of my favs Stormy Weather with Lena Horne and the Rat Pack has a real NY vibe. I want to bring together the glamour of Hollywood  in the forties and fifties and sophistication that has always embodied NY.

  • Yes, it looks bad on the same person.  A person wearing black standing next to a person wearing blue is fine.  So just have the groom in a black or silver vest, same with the groomsmen.

I think you're making this more complicated than it needs to be.  It's just the color scheme.  No one will notice or care.

A dark violet/purple would be absolutely stunning with silver and black.  It would definitely set that glamorous mood you're looking for and it will make you in your white dress pop out all the more.  If you do go with red, again, I would go with a darker shade.  Just your basic red does seem a little cliche, but darker red with the black and silver will shout class.  But I also have to agree that if you really want navy, it won't clash with the groom's tux.  All in all, I say dark purple.  For some more inspiration, check out the links below:

  • Thanks, the violet looks great. I think we found a winner

  • We did Black/Silver or Gray/Bright Aqua Blue
  • There are so many shades of blue!  Some navy blues are going to clash with the black, but if you go to a tux shop, or to men's warehouse, they have some very elegant blues! Just look at the colors together. I'll bet you end up with something that is a couple of shades darker than royal blue, but also some shades lighter than navy. I hope you are able to find what you want! Hope it is perfect.
  • YOu can always use white as an accent color.
