Table Runners....to do or not to do?

Hi all,

My wedding is in about 2 months, 2 weeks and 5 days (not that I am keeping count or anything).  I have been going back and forth about using table runners.  Our tables are round (about 5 feet in diameter).  I am leaning towards runners b/c the linens are all black  and white (black underlay, white table cloth, white chair cover, black organza chair sash) and I want to bring some color into the mix but keep it subtle.  We are basically making the centerpieces ourselves and I am trying to keep the flower budget down.  Centerpieces are large hurricane vases with used wine bottle corks in them and a flameless candle on top, possibly some alstromeria liliy blooms scattered at the base with tea light candles.  The entire feel/theme is an Italian/wine themed thing (hence the corks).  I want to soften the stark black and white so I was thinking muted gold (which is one of the accent colors I am using, main wedding color is called 'wine'/burgundy) or champagne colored runners to offset the candle light and cork colors.  Another issue is that the cheapest runners I can find are satin or organza and I'm not sure how that will look on the basic cotton/polyester table cloth.  I have also found crushed taffeta which offers a nice shimmery aspect that will probably reflect the candle light as well.
thanks for your opinions!  happy planning!  Cool

  • I did table runners so that there would be more color in the room since all our table and chair linens were white and/or ivory. You can get them for pretty cheap and then re-sell them after the wedding is over.
  • A subtle champagne in the crushed shimmer material would be beautiful with the candlelight.  We had runners in "aubergine" with chair ties in "golden sage" (i.e., dark purple and light green) on our ivory linens, and it looked beautiful with the centerpieces (purple orchids and ivory roses surrounded by dark purple votives).  It was actually cheaper to purchase them online as opposed to renting them, and we gifted them to the venue at the end of the night to be used free of cost for future brides.  I loved the way it looked.  If you have room in the budget, go for it.
