Band or DJ???

So, I can not decide for the life me, every other day I change my mind, should I do band or a DJ at the reception.

It will be a black-tie affair inside of a museum (the Henry Ford, if you are familiar), about 175 guest, and we enjoy country, pop, rap, indie, and oldies.

I think for your setting in the Museum (yes, I am familiar) a band would be nice. Many bands can cover all different types of music so just look around.

I'd expect a band at a black tie wedding.

I voted band because of the setting and formality of your wedding. I myself chose a Dj for budget reasons and because our event will only be semi-formal, but a band would definitely set the tone of your wedding and most good bands can cover lots of different genres quite well.

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but we have a similar dilemma: band or DJ? But we're only expecting 60 guests, and it will be black tie as well. Would a 7 piece band be overwhelming in the room? Would that even give enough variety?

IMO, If you're calling it black-tie, you should have a band. I think putting a DJ in kills some of the formality that youre going for.

I personally am having a 170+ guest wedding, at 1pm, not black tie...Im having a DJ.

For such a formal wedding, I recommend a band like the PPs.

I choose band if you can afford it. If it's not within your budget, then a DJ is fine.

I never had considered the idea that a band seems more formal but after everyone else pointing it out it seems really obvious. I say go with the band too even if its not a huge guest list.  )

i originally voted dj so you can have a variety of music at your disposal, but after reading all of the posts, i agree that a band is more formal. i hadn't really thought of it before, but it does make sense!! just make sure you do your research on a band cause you don't want a lame one!

I was at wedding recently that had a great band, and while they took a break, the couple had their IPod going with their favorite music that the band couldn't play.  Worked out really well, I think we'll do something similiar.  I agree with the rest of the folks that bands are better for more formal affairs.

I voted for the DJ just because I think you could get a better variety of music, but I agree that a band is more formal and would be a more entertaining experience.
