Cake vs. Cupcakes

I am debating whether or not to do a wedding cake or cupcakes.  I rarely ever eat the cake at weddings, and my sister ended up throwing out a lot of her wedding cake after her wedding because there was so much left over- so I am leaning towards cupcakes.  We would still do a small cake for us to cut.  Any opinions as to which is better?

Re: Cake vs. Cupcakes

  • I'm doing cupcakes.  I just find them to be cheaper, more fun and to have a lot more personality than cake (plus, i think theyre waaaay tastier than cakes!)
  • We're doing cupcakes, too. I agree with Jessica that they're more fun, plus we're able to do many different flavors and sizes.  We've ordered some minis, regulars, and will do our cutting with a jumbo one.  I also think a cupcake display can be more creative.  I am very excited about them!

  • Cake and cupcakes are the same thing. They are made from the same ingredients using the same recipes. If someone doesn't like regular cake, why would they eat a cupcake? Serve a completely different dessert that you'd rather have. Another thing to keep in mind is that you can cut and feed each other any dessert under the sun. It does not have to be cake.
  • Well, cupcakes are cute, taste just the same as cake, are usually cheaper, and can be displayed in very cute, imaginative ways.  So yes, I think cupcakes are a fun alternative to cake, and very popular.

BUT, I don't personally care to eat cupcakes, especially in public, because I find them messy and awkward to eat.  The put like 2 inches of icing on top of them, and I always make a mess getting the wrappers off.  If offered a cupcake in public, I decline, especially if I am in dressy clothes.  Because I know I will end up with icing all over my face and hands, possibly my clothes.  At home, I eat them on a plate with a fork, lol.

But if you really like the idea of cupcakes, then go ahead!  Not all guests are as messy as I am, lol!  You could order a small cake for the cutting/photos and then serve the cupcakes to guests.  Or just feed each other a cupcake.  Sounds like fun!

I totally agree that cupcakes are very messy to eat since most people cannot open their mouths wide enough to eat them without getting icing on their faces. Serving them with forks and plates are much better (and yes there are many cupcake bakeries that serve them that way).
  • It's really a personal preference.  I like that cupcakes have a big mound of icing at the top, but I generally prefer thicker moister cake and that usually means an actual cake.
