Centerpiece dilemma! AH!

Hi newly engaged, fellow brides-to-be, and now wives!

I am in desparate need of some help! I bought faux plastic pearls to put in the bottom of my vases for centerpieces, along with flowers and floating candles.... but here's the dilemma.... my pearls don't SINK! :( .. I should have realized that plastic pearls would float, but I obviously was too excited that I even FOUND faux pearls at such a good price, that I looked passed the fact that plastic floats =/ .. Is there anything I can do to get these suckers to sink??... (without going on a manhunt for new faux pearls.) I don't want to change my vision, and want to stick with the pearls... PLEASE HELP!

THANK YOU!!!!!!!

  • You could try wrapping them in saran wrap, put them in the water and squeeze out the bubbles. Not sure that would work, but then you could put the flowers in (if you are having flowers) and break that through the saran wrap.

An alternative would be to put the pearls in the bottom of the vase then put the saran wrap on top, try to mold it to the sides of the vase above the pearls, then add the water. The weight should hold them down.

I'm assuming they don't have holes, so stringing them together wouldn't be an option.

If you aren't goin to re-use the vases or pearls, you could always fill the bottom of the vase with the pearls, drop some Elmer's glue (that dries clear) on the top of the pearls, keep adding pearls and glue, they'll stick together and probably be heavy enough to stay in the bottom of the vase. The flower stems won't be able to be stuck into them though.

Hope one of these work for you.
  • You explained it perfectly! Thank you! :) .. I will definitely ahve to check it out and see what I can find.. I appreciate your help!

Sue-N-Kevin, that's crazy that you said that because I tried the saran wrap! haha, it worked,... but, it started to float with the saran wrap as soon as I added the water! =/ ugh.. I thought maybe weighing it down, but you can see the saran wrap :( ... I was thinking the whole glue thing too! Do you think that would work!?!? I don't see why not! I'm just nervous that half way through the night I'm going to end up with lumps of pearls floating in my centerpieces... I might have to sacrafice a vase and some pearls as a test run with the glue.... thank you!!!!! :)))) I'll try it and post a pic when I'm done!

  • Elmers glue is water soluble.  If you are going to that extreme you may have to use something like crazy glue.
  • Use an adhesive called E-600.  Its really stong, watch out!  Use gloves!  Glue those pearls to the bottom of the vase.  Available at Home Depot and its like $6

  • I have no idea if this would work or not, but have you tried poking holes in the pearls?  I wonder if there are holes in the pearls so they fill with water if they would sink.

I know you're trying to get them just to the bottom, but the water beads used in this tutorial for floating pearls would probably work to keep them at the bottom. Otherwise I agree with PP about maybe just poking a pin hole in the plastic so they fill with water and then sink. Good luck!

  • You ladies are great! Thank you for all of your help! :))

The pearls already have holes in them, since they can be used for jewelry making, so unfortunately that wouldn't work. I'm going to give the E-600 a shoot, and maybe even the water beads! I will definitely keep everyone posted on the outcome! That way if any future brides come along, they'll know what to do!

    Thanks again ladies!!!!
