1940's Theme

My fiance and I are planning a 1940's-ish wedding theme. We're going to use ivory, champagne, gold, and black for our colors but I need some ideas!

Re: 1940's Theme

  • I love that theme! So glamorous and there is so much you can do.
My Fi and I are using white roses with peacock feathers to add that touch of sparkle, along with vintage, black and white photographs, dim candle lights, period music, and coctails. I feel that this theme is all about the details, about being as simple and elegant as possible - the calligraphy on your place cards, the music that plays during your cocktail hour, even the cocktails you serve.

This theme is also amazing as far as your dress, makeup and overall look go. Go with big, red lips, pale skin, false eyelashes and dramatic eyeliner (see Marilyn Monroe for inspiration). For your FI, look at various photos and sites and get a clearer idea of the look he would like to go for. Is he a Clark Gable kind of guy? Or perhaps a little ghangster?

This period was all about glamour, but an understanded glamour. Remember there was a war going on. Material things were scarce, and people did what they could with what they had, focusing on small details that brought that period to life.

    Good luck and have fun!
  • Did you try doing a google search? That might help.
  • I had a similar theme for my wedding..I adore this period. Some of the best inspiration, for us anyway, came from films from this time period. Right after we got engaged, we spent a couple of weekends doing move-marathons of all the movies I have from that era. Happy planning (and if you need any playlists, etc, etc.) feel free to PM me. :)

  • Well we're doing good as far as music goes i.e. Frank Sinatra and Loius Armstrong. My biggest worry is decorations and favors.
  • dont forget to check out the vintage board on here to connect with other knotties for inspiration.
  • We're doing the same theme. My FI is a big WWII buff so we're using different towns/battles during the war as our table names. Black feathers and diamond/crystal accents where we can.

Are you doing WWII 1940's?  If so, I think a woman on the military page is planning the same thing.

  • Well I don't know for sure but I think we're going for more of an old Hollywood theme than a WWII theme. I wanted to do something fun an original for the save the dates and possibly the invitations but I'm so clueless as to what to do! The theme was more my fiance's idea than mine.
