How to make Pink Water for Centerpeices

I am trying to figure out the easiest and most inexpensive way to color the water into my centerpeices..I know how to make magenta and purple with food coloring..but has anyone actually done this themselves? Any tips?? I am also worried about the color dying the flowers..so I might go with fake orchids in the ceterpeices if this does happen. I am also needing help choosing the color of water I would like to use..My scheme is Aubergine,Bright Red,and Hot Pink..with peacock feathers in the mix..We are using different shapes and sizes of vases for the reception and I thought to add a punch i would color the water..The table clothes are either going to be white,or purple..So What color would you choose ??? Pink?purple? or red??? Thank you in advance :)

Red food dye?  Experiment until you have the color you're looking for.
  • If you're doing white flowers there is a very good chance that the dye will color the flowers.. You should definitely test it out before doing all of the centerpieces like that.

  • My local grocery store actually sells pink food coloring in the cake section.  I just noticed it a couple weeks ago.  I agree with the PP though that it might dye your flowers.  Have you looked into water pearls?  Those come in a lots of colors and even the clear ones can be dyed to any color you want.

  • This might sound dumb but if your color is hot pink, what about using a piece of highlighter? You'd have to take apart the highlighter, cut it into a few pieces, and see how much you need and if it was the right color.

I remember someone did that in college, they took a few empty vodka bottles and added water and a little piece of highlighter to make all different colors.

It doesn't sound too classy...but if you try it out beforehand- leave it in for however long you want and then take it out. See what it looks like...just a thought! :)

  • Depending on how much dye you use the flowers (regardless of being real or fake) will probably end up some shade of whatever color you make the water. It would likely stain the fake flowers and the real flowers (depending on how long they're in the water) will suck the colored water up like regular water and some of the dye will end up deposited in the petals.

I vaguely remember doing an experiment to this effect with real flowers in grade school. We stuck a bunch of flowers in different colored water to illustrate how the water went through the plants. Depending on the color, people ended up with varying degrees of colored flowers. I think blue ended up the darkest.

  • What about some watercolor paint?
Those little plastic things of water color paints for kids are like, IDK, $0.50 at a bargain store.  Just pop the pink circle of paint out while it's dry, cut it into a few pieces, and pop them into the water.

Obviously I'd still do some test runs, but those shouldn't dye your flowers like the food coloring certainly would.
