DIY Reception Music?

Thoughts on using a laptop + playlist for reception music? Has anyone tried this personally?

Re: DIY Reception Music?

  • We burned CDs to play on the sound system at the B&B where we were married.  It was fine.

  • We're planning to have a band until about 9pm and then we'll switch to laptop/ipod after that (the reception will be at my parents' farm, so we can go as late as we want). I'm hoping this will work out okay. Glad to hear PPs think so! Honestly, if you pick enough songs that people like to dance to, I doubt they'll care too much whether it's from a laptop or a DJ. The only upside to having a DJ is that he or she can often gauge the mood of the crowd and switch up songs accordingly, but I don't think that's an absolute essential.

  • We found a stand alone speaker that you plug your iPod into and come with a microphone and we are using it for the ceremony and reception, alogn with the Wedding DJ app.  I hope it works out.  We just couldn't afford live musicians and we are having a very DIY affair, so I think it'll work.  The sound system cost $120 at Costco, is like 3 ft by 2 ft and has amazing sound.  Our wedding is smallish, 50-60 people, so it should work.  I think it's good to make sure you have like at least an extra 30-60 min of padding music so you never run out of songs.  I also have designated a friend of mine to be in charge of switching playlists and we have done it a few times so she can just pop over and change it.
  • I saw that stand alone system at Costco! I was just going to mention it.  Looks awesome. I kind of want it for summer parties.

You'll never be subject to a cash bar, gap, potluck wedding, or b-list if you marry a Muppet Overlord.
  • We're planning on DJing our own music as well. And we just attended a wedding last year that did and it turned out fine. As long as you have someone overseeing it. I also plan on having a 'Playbill' of how I want the music to run with the order of events, so the person knows what's going on.
