Real Butterfly Centerpieces!

The caption said they released the butterflies right after the party. I've never seen anything like this.

No one should ever see anything like this.  Not  good idea at all.  Rather sad, actually.
  • WOW, that is....special? I read about one girl who did fish in centerpieces at her wedding and most of them didn't make it to the end of the reception!

  • I was going to equate this to having goldfish in centerpieces, which is not a good idea either. Living creatures are NOT decorations and definitely should not be treated as such.

  • I find it kind of ironic that posters are so irate about insects being used as decor, inasmuch as reception menus almost always include animals with much higher consciousness and capacity for suffering than butterflies have . . .

Good point. I wonder what the response will be.

I have no intention of using butterflies! I just wanted to share the picture. I have heard of fish but never butterflies. At least you wouldn't have to worry about poop.

But I am having dead animals served to my guests like most everyone else.

<div>I get both of your points, but I think they are a little off base. </div><div>
</div><div>I'm not plopping cows stuck in tiny cages on my tables and attempting to call them decor or centrepieces at my wedding. I believe there is a huge difference between relying upon an animal for food and nutrition compared to trapping that animal and using it as a novelty or decoration. </div><div>

  • The problem with the butterflies isn't their "pain and suffering.'  An insect nervous system is much more reduced than ours and they are mainly responding to cues, not really pain (and yes, I have some basis of what I'm talking about.  I'm getting my Masters in Entomology and just completed my insect physiology course).

The problem with using butterflies at weddings is these butterflies are usually caught from the wild, not rand raised.  Then they are transported around the country and the seasons.  The butterflies are moved from their habitat and will have a difficult time orienting to their overwintering homes.  The other problem is that these butterflies, after they have been caught, are all placed in large holding containers, allowing pathogen transmission.  These butterflies will then be released all over the country and some areas are starting to see some decline in the number of monarch populations from diseases transported in by other areas.

This is a good website with information about the dangers of using these commercial butterfly releases

If you really want butterflies, catch native butterflies from the area.

Actually, there is no suffering whatsoever in the harvesting of animals as meat.

I was hoping all of those videos by animal advocates were fake, you know the ones where they show how the animals are kept in confined areas and how brutally they are killed. Good to know there was no suffering in the process of bringing my meat to the table.

Anyway, I'm a carnivore so I don't have much defense when it comes to eating animals that were killed for my cuisine choice.

Ladies, I posted the pic just as a conversation piece. Again, I have nor had any intention of using butterflies.

Wow! Cool Blackfire. I learned something new today. I think it's totally rockin' to see a chick so into bugs. Go girl.
  • ohwhynot, I totally agree and I love eating meat.  But, I defniitely know that it is harmful to our environment and definitely cruel to animals.

    CA2, you are incredibly ignorant.
