XP - When To Do A Cake Tasting?

I'm an American moving to England in April.  My wedding is in October.

I'm planning a trip to see FI in London in February.   We've already selected all our vendors.  I was very careful about the cake maker - I knew I wanted a STUNNING cake, and I found someone who can do it, based on her website, reviews, and references.   I went ahead and paid a deposit, though I haven't had a chance to taste the cake.  My question is, should FI and I go in Feb to do a cake tasting, or wait until April?  Does it matter?  How far out from your wedding date did you design your cake?   If it matters, we are having cupcakes, a four-tier wedding cake, and another gluten-free cake (and gluten-free cupcakes).

  • Cake was the last thing we did. We went 4 months before our wedding but could have waited a little longer.

  • I didn't do the cake tasting until a month and a half before. It was probably risky waiting that late, but we did cupcakes, so I didn't think I needed much time.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

We did the cake tasting 2 months before the wedding. It was plenty of time for us.

ETA: The cake was included in the package with our venue, so I guess the date was already 'reserved' for us.

We did our cake tasting a few months ago even though our wedding is this coming April.  My FI was so excited to do it so I figured why not.  We are really happy with our cake design and hte flavors and it's another thing out of the way!
