Plastic Drinkware?

My reception venue is a large outdoor garden that specializes in koi.  They don't want glass beer and wine glasses possibly being dropped into the dozens of koi ponds they have scattered through the grounds (koi are expensive and glass can easily kill them).  I'd like the look of glass and am OK with buying some glasses, but don't want to spend more than a dollar or so per glass.    Basically, I just don't want anything to look or feel cheap.

Is this very common?  I've googled plastic glasses, but can't find anything that's in between fairly expensive (permanent crappy restaurant drinkware) and cheap (new years eve party for 100).

Re: Plastic Drinkware?

  • I am having my reception as a BBQ sort of... I haven't really decided completely. I don't want to spend a lot of money on drinking glasses or anything. So I think that everyone will do just fine with plastic. It makes for easy clean up and then it is easier to match it into your color combo.
  • I spent some time worrying about what type of glassware to use myself.  I was afraid things would look too cheap, but then I realized my guests won't be there to criticize the plates or cups - they're coming to watch FI and I get married and to have a good time.  We decided to purchase plastic cups (Solo brand, for example) to match our wedding colors, and we're just going with that.  Our reception isn't super formal, but it's a buffet dinner.  The caterer is providing plastic silverware and paper plates.  And like it was mentioned above, plastic is easy cleanup :)  But then too, it's a matter of your personal style.  If you don't feel right just having the el cheapo plastic cups, then by all means, do what's right for you.  I've seen some nicer looking plastic cups at several party stores (Factory Card Outlet, Party Source/Party Town).  There are some good websites too - OrientalTrading.com, FlowerFactory.com, MyPaperShop.com... hope that helps and good luck with your planning!
  • We bought plastic glasses for our wedding, we went to BJ's (its like a sams club) they had these wonderful square shaped glasses, nice sized and in the words of my fiance the will hold a double jack and coke plus ice!  they were 30 for $6, and then we went to the dollar store and got the wine glasses (plastic ones) they were 6 for $1 and they look nice and are sturdy.  In our mind well worth it!
