Reception Theme vs. Reception Dance Music

I need some advice.  Maybe it's nothing, but I'm trying to pay attention to details such as reception music.  We are having a vintage, 50's inspired wedding/reception.  We want to play Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Big Band, etc at the reception and I want to even dance to some of it.  I also want to have some newer, top 40 music played at the dance.  Does it make sense to incorporate Lady Gaga or the Black Eyed Peas in a vintage wedding?  I want to keep in classy...I don't want it to turn into something that feels like a high school dance but I don't want people to dance.  I feel like I'm rambling and I hope this makes sense :) What do y'all think?  Thanks!

Re: Reception Theme vs. Reception Dance Music

  • You're thinking too hard about this.  Your "theme" doesn't have to dominate EVERY aspect of your wedding.  In fact, a little theme goes a very long way.  Too much theme and it begins to resemble a prom or sweet sixteen.

Your guests will surely appreciate a variety of music.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • Are you having a band or a DJ? My friend had a swing band for her reception and they actually played a range of music genres. Obviously it had a swing type flare to the more modern songs because of the instruments they were using but I thought that it was nice to hear a range of music, but it all "fit" together. So that may be an option.
  • We are also doing a vintage (Old Hollywood) theme, and will feature a lot of older tunes. But we are also mixing in 80's-current tunes.
