Post Wedding Party? (longish)

So the idea is to have our wedding on a tall ship (kinda like a big sail boat, all wooden and awesome looking). We wanted it to be a mid-morning ceremony with a brunch reception. We're going this weekend to see the ship and finalize this stuff.

Most of our guests are going to be from out of town and I kinda feel bad for asking them to travel this far (most are driving ~10 hours) and then everything be over by like 2 in the afternoon. I was trying to think of something to do so it doesn't feel like I just ditched all my guests :-/ Would it be weird to have a beach party after? Not nearly as organized an event as the reception, but just something so we could all chill out and socialize and stuff after the wedding....

I've never really heard of anyone doing something like this. We both like it - a way to spend more time with our families in a more relaxed environment.

What do you guys think?

  • I think it is a great idea.

People do this with late weddings, they go to a bar or something, so I definitely don't think it is strange for a daytime wedding.

I think it's a great idea.  I went to a wedding of some friends that had their ceremony on a beach with a formal brunch.  And then after an hour break, his parents hosted everyone at the house they rented on the beach, and we all just swam, hung out all day and had a bonfire later on in the day.  It was so fun and a nice way to wind down.
  • We have a lot of OOT guests as well and are doing something similar by hosting a morning-after brunch for them

  • Ive never been to a wedding where this was done, but it sounds great! It gives the OOT guests something to do with the rest of the day, and be able to enjoy the reason they came down in the first place, YOU! :) Sounds like a great way to end out such a special day.

  • I'm so grateful for everyones opinions, thank you :-) I had thought of maybe including an insert with our invitations announcing these plans for anyone that would wish to join us.

The only thing I'm kinda worried about is food. It's definitely not in our budget to take everyone out to a restaurant and the beach won't allow grills. We'd have to do cold food :-\
