Centerpiece second thoughts?

I'm doing a brunch reception in a beautiful log-cabin-like venue with large windows overlooking a golf course.  I was/am planning on floating candle centerpieces, but my fiance made a comment that it is a tad odd that we're doing candles when everything is going to be well lit already, cause it'll be mid day.

Right now I'm still thinking floating candles, just maybe having second thoughts?  Because naturally I've been getting everyone's imput about everything (whether I want it or not) and I would rather not start this debate with my family.

What are your thoughts?  Is it odd?  Too odd?  What might I be able to substitute for a similar price and simplicity?

  • Candles are classic and its fine to use them even during a daytime reception. Have you thought about doing floating flowers instead? Or adding some flowers to soften it up a little. Sometimes even just placing some roses petals in the bowl with the candles can give it a different look.

What color are the candles?  Can you get them in your colors?  If they're colored, they will still provide visual interest without actually having to be a source of light.

Another thought is to dress up the vase a little.  if it's a square or a cylinder, you can run a length of ribbon around the base of it for a pop of color.

I agree with this. I think it will look great even during the daytime!

  • If you're worried about not getting as much "bang for your buck" on the candles in the day as you would at night, you could always have the floaters be the finishing touch instead of the main event. Maybe you could have something else submerged in the water, or better yet, let non-floating candles and/or their holders be statements unto themselves--that way, you'd have something with a little more daytime drama than glass and water with a little flame would offer. I love candles and think they're fine at any time during the day--it just depends on what sort of look you're going for!

  • Thank you all for the reassurance!  And I do like the flower suggestion, because I can still make that in my price range
