Sashes without chair covers????

I have always wanted chair covers for my reception. However, it is looking like we wont be able to afford it. So, I was thinking about just doing sashes. The venue's chairs aren't bad at all. They don't match my color theme, but they don't clash either. I am having a black and white wedding and the chairs are a mauve-ish color. I was thinking about doing every other chair with a black sash then the next in a white sash. I need your help! Do you think it will look tacky? Like...it would be obvious that we couldn't affor covers so we downgraded?

I think all white sashes would look nice. Mauve and black might look weird on top of each other. But I like the idea of just a sash if you can't afford chair covers. I don't think it will look tacky, but I think the white and mauve will go together better.

I would leave them off personally if the chairs aren't bad.  The sash is just going to draw the eye to them whereas if you leave them off, no one is even going to notice they aren't covered.

This. I had the same thought for the banquet chairs. I didn't want to splurge on chair covers, so I was planning on doing just sashes. My event coordinator mentioned that all this will do is bring more attention to the chairs.

I think I might still do sashes on the chairs for the sweetheart table for FI and I (we'll have different linens as well), but the rest of the chairs will just be as-is.

Ditto this... especially if they're banquet style chairs it might not look right. However, I've seen just the sashes on chivari chairs and thought that looked beauitful.

Like PPs said.. I think the sashes would draw more attention - Especially if you do every other one. All white would look better IMO than all black.. but simply one solid would look better than both

Hmmm, I personally think chair covers are so ugly. To each their own of coarse! To me they look like sheets thrown over old cruddy furniture you are trying to hide.

If the chairs are decent leave them be and save yourself the cash for elsewhere in your budget. If they are decent and you just want to incorporate them into your decor I would use a black sash in a material that has some texture to it, maybe even an inexpensive tulle. Create wide bands across the front part of the chair that are a little bunchy or ruched up and then put a simple knot in the back, bows can be to fru-fru. It would look great if you could then slide a single white bloom through the knot, or every other knot. Maybe a large peony or a bundle of baby's breath.
