dyeable ribbon?

I am working with a fall pallett (brown, ivory, etc) for my wedding, and my "pop" color is a gray/slate blue.  Because it's kind of an "off" color, I need to match it exactly to my girls' dresses.  I'm probably going to wrap my bouquet with a blue ribbon and would like some ribbon for my centerpieces - does anyone know where I can order ribbon dyed EXACTLY to the color of the dresses?  I really want to weave this in because blue is my absolute favorite color and my girls already ordered their dresses, so there's no going back now!

Re: dyeable ribbon?

  • I've never heard of dyeable ribbon either, but I'm guessing it would be hard to get that perfect match by dyeing it.  Have you looked at Michael's and Jo-Ann for a close match?
  • Anything that is a natural fiber-- silk, in particular-- will dye the best. You can dye synthetics with fiber-specific dyes, but those can be trickier. It's easiest to DIY rather than trying to find someone who you can hire as a dyer-- though you might try posting on Craigslist to find a local costume or fashion designer who would be willing to help you out. Seems like more trouble than it's worth to me. Why not use a coordinating color?

No one is going to drag your bridesmaids over to the centerpieces, hold up their skirts against the ribbons, and say, "Aha!  It doesn't match!  Her marriage is no longer valid!"  You won't even be able to see the ribbon on the bouquets in any of the photos, unless you take a picture of the bouquet by itself, in which case it won't be next to the dresses.

Honestly, if you poll your guests the next morning and find that even 10% of them remember what colors you used at all, I'll personally buy you a beer.  Not the next year or the next month, the very next day.  (People within a year of their own weddings don't count.)

Besides, hand dyeing fabric is a tricky proposition, and it's unlikely that you'd be able to get the exact color even by dyeing.  Just take a swatch of the fabric from the BM dresses when you go shopping for ribbon and try to get as close as you can.  Or go with a completely different color for the ribbon.  Either way, no one will notice but you.

This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
