noontime menu help!

Sorry for the double-post but I think someone tried to hack my last thread!

I am having a buffet reception. Cocktail hour starts at noon and lunch at 1. This is the buffet menu our venue offered us - their standard diner buffet:

Cocktail Hour: fruits & chocolate fountain, veggie platters & dip, cheese & crackers, cheese fondue, caviar

Salad: Field Greens with Cherry Vinaigrette

Entrees: Salmon, Beef Bourguinonne (filet mignon tips over egg noodles), Chicken Basicilico (chicken with tomato cream sauce) served with roasted potatoes

Pasta: cheese tortellini with veggies

Carving Station: turkey or ham or beef brisket

Dessert: chocolatte mousse, cheesecake or poundcake, and wedding cake

Now this food sounds tasty to me, but I'm worried it's going to be SO heavy, especially with the cream sauces on the entrees and pasta. should we switch to lunch options or brunch buffet? i think all they have for a lunch menu is soup, salad, and sandwiches, which to me is way too casual for a reception. brunch buffet would be ok but i still feel like it's a little less formal. i'm not sure, i've never been to a brunch wedding! i have been to fancy brunches that were GREAT but never involved any dancing afterwards. their brunch menu does look really good. but maybe 1:00 is too late to start eating brunch? idk! help!!

Re: noontime menu help!

  • I don't think that's too heavy -- most lunch receptions that I've attended have been similar to a dinner reception, which yours is. You could do brunch -- I always love brunch! I don't think it's too late for brunch, but that does have a different kind of feel to it so it really depends on what kind of ambiance you're looking for. And a lunch menu with sandwiches is very different from what you've described, much more casual. Any of the options would be ok, just depends on what kind of feel you want the meal to have.
  • I think it sounds great.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Your menu sounds delicious. I would be more than happy to have a meal like that at any hour of the day but that is just me :)
  • I think it sounds great.  We are having a late lunch reception that will be heavy food, too.  While I wouldn't want to eat a heavy lunch every day, I also wouldn't want to eat a super-heavy dinner every day, and at a wedding I'd be happy with those options.

I love the cheese fondue during cocktail hour, as well as the chocolate fountain.  I wouldn't like it if it were an entirely sweet cocktail hour, but I really like having one sweet thing as an option before lunch.
  • I had this exact dilemma with our food because we're having a morning ceremony with a reception going into the afternoon. we decided to move up our ceremony a bit until 10-1030, and are following with the brunch buffet reception. who doesnt love brunch?! lol
