When guests want the bride & groom to kiss

Not sure if this happens everywhere, but 'round here there has always been a tradition of the guests "asking" the bride & groom to stand up and kiss during dinner.  Traditionally guests would tap their forks on their glasses or plates or whatever to make some noise.  In recent years most venues have asked people not to do this (because you just know some drunk idiot managed to break a drinking glass with a salad fork) so these days people have new weird, annoying things to get the bride & groom to kiss.

Some suggestions are for a guest (or a whole table) to stand up and sing a love song, or ring bells, or tell a joke, or donate $ to a charity basket. 

I hate all of these things and don't want to be annoyed during dinner.    Any interesting (or even fun) spins to put on this??

People tap once - you kiss.

People tap again - you ignore.

That will cutting the tapping out right there.

Anything else, I would ignore.  Charity baskets or singing a love song?  Oh dear God - please sit down and eat your dinner.  :-)

If your guests want you to kiss they'll find a way (and it usually is clinking glasses).  I wouldn't find another option for this.

It's not allowed at the venue so apparently I'm supposed to come up with some other stupid thing to save the venue's glasses.

The tradition has always seemed childish to me, as if everyone should be standing around chanting, "Kiss! Kiss!"  I wouldn't find a replacement for it.

How is the venue going to tell people that clinking glasses is not allowed?  How would you tell people what the replacement is?

This all seems awkward and weird.

If the venue actively stops people from clinking, then you have nothing to worry about.  Unless you really want a replacement, I wouldn't worry about having a back up plan.

I've been to a wedding with "kissing bells" - you just put a few out at each table, and they're pretty inexpensive ... and saves the venue's glasses.  And most of them serve a double purpose - the rings on the top of the bell can hold place cards or table cards.

There's placecards with bells on the knot.  I always love the clinking though!  How will they make people stop?

Also, if the venue is so worried about their glasses, maybe they need to opt for plastic only.  What are the waitstaff going to do - run around at your reception telling people to stop it?  It is not a child's birthday party.

Agree with pp!  I love how the venue thinks this can actually be enforced.  I could just see one of the older men in my family getting up in their face and letting them know who was boss lol.

It's very common where I'm from for the guests to do something to get the bride and groom to kiss.... some love it, some don't and that's ok.. they don't have to participate.  What happens is that the MC announces at the beginning of the evening what the protocol is.  I've seen some really silly ideas and some that were a lot of fun... all depends on who you're inviting.   things I've seen...

*a roulette wheel that you come up and spin - a few are for the bride and groom to kiss, but there are other things that you could get such as the couple married the longest kiss etc

*mini-putt .. get a hole in one and the bride and groom kiss

*come up and pull a trivia question out of a hat.. answer it and they'll kiss

*one I was at had a list of randam words on a sheet of paper.  You had to create a story from the words and read it for them to kiss. This was actually a lot of fun and every table got involved and created a story

*pay money.. the more money the longer the kiss

*the dreaded sing a song with the word love in it

I'm sure there are many, many more.  Good luck deciding!  This can be a lot of fun (even though there are a lot on this board who hate this idea)

I feel your pain. I have been to weddings where the bride and groom put out little bells on every table just for that purpose. I am not a fan.

I don't see how the venue could possibly enforce something like that. Like someone else said, if they are so concerned about their glassware, they should replace it with plastic. But it sounds like someone at the venue is being way too anal. I mean, you have to hit a glass pretty hard to break it with a fork...simple tapping shouldn't damage them, right?
