Food...is this tacky?

I asked my man to pick 5 things he wanted to decide on so he felt like he was involved...

He loves chinese food (we both do) and now wants to change our menu to have a completely chinese food reception. Our theme is not asian at all. Will this clash and look tacky?

  • As long as theres something everyone will like, i dont see a problem.  Its yalls day and this shows a little more of your personalities and what you like.

  • I do not find it tacky.

That said my family (immediate and extended) are not Chinese food eaters.  Sadly they are not adventurous in food.  I would not have served Chinese because over half my guest list would not be happy.

Of course, you can not please everyone, but if you know a large percentage of people might not be thrilled, then I would only pick a few items and add in more 'simplier' foods also.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • If you know a lot of your guests would enjoy it I would say go for it.  If, on the other hand, you think many of your guests would not enjoy it I would probably go with something a little more traditional.

I would also be careful about what caterer you choose.  Many Chinese restaurants in my area only provide food that is MSG free if you request it.  If your family is anything like mine there are a fair number of people that have an allergy or intolerance for MSG.
  • I have a subtle asain theme going for my wedding.  I'm not asain at all so I didn't want it to be extreme about it but I love the paper lanters, paper fans, elephant place card holders, and paper cranes.  Our menu reflects that subtle asain theme.. we are doing honey glazed salmon, teriaki chicken, blanched and sauteed fresh green beans with almonds, rice pilaf, and chinese coleslaw..  There will also be fresh fruit, a chips and dips station, and a candy bar.

I don't think that screams asain, but I think it has a subtle flair.

Maybe you could do something like that?

  • Not tacky at all. As long as there is enough food for everyone and there's a variety, you will be fine. Most people actually don't like fancy food at all and wish they could serve food they like and are familiar with but they don't because everyone around them tells them that it is improper to do so and that their wedding will be doomed. Having good food, regardless of the type, is alot better than having wasted expensive fancy food that no one touches.

i think this depends on your definition of "fancy food".

the foods that we are having are your typical wedding food, but also are foods that we would normally eat anyway. maybe we just eat more "fancy" foods lol
