Friday the 13th Wedding... ideas? Luck symbols?

So we just set our date, and it's 9/13/13, which is a Friday the 13th.

I don't want to be cheesy, but thought it might be neat to incorporate some acknowledgement of the day, but maybe in a turnabout way, like good luck symbols. Definitely doesn't have to be a theme, but something.

Any ideas? Open to everything, all we have is a date and nothing else really!

Thanks.

Re: Friday the 13th Wedding... ideas? Luck symbols?

  • Honestly, I think incorporating it at all would be a little bit weird.  Obviously you're not superstitious, or else you wouldn't have picked this date.  So to pretend that you ARE superstitious and use good luck symbols would just seem odd to me.

I would just skip it, and make no mention of the fact that it's Friday the 13th.

  • Ours was just the las friday the 13th (7/13/12) & we thought about the date for 1/2 a second and nothing more. Our priest did a nice homily about it but that was the extent. We thought about doing little horseshoe charms on the table, but then decided it was too cheesy. Honestly, no one really thought about the date.

  • Friday the 13s are lucky days in my world (and anyone who went to my undergrad school).  Not everyone thinks doom and gloom!
  • Ditto PP. No need to call attention to it.

  • I saw a four wedding episode where each table was named a different good luck symbol/idea and on the back of the card they explained where the symbol/tradition came from.  I thought that was very cute.

  • Lol we just set our wedding date a few weeks ago for the same date. My FH grandmother was born on a friday the 13th. So we are doing it in part of memory of her and to have something positive to think about/remeber on future friday the 13ths through on out the year.

I was thinking about having fun with the superstion thing and do all things supersticous. Such as instead of an archway, walk under a ladder. Break a mirror instead of a cup (Even thought its neigher of our religions), throw salt over the wrong shoulder. Which for people who know me it would be perfect bc im "off" like that. But my FH is catholic and his family would not be ok with any of it.

So we are just doing a "normal" wedding theme on  9/13/13.

    Best of luck
  • OP - I think actually calling attention to it is what would bring the cheese factor in.  I'd leave it alone.
  • <div>That's so different!  Lets see good luck symbols there's four leaf clovers (if you're irish that would be awesome!), rabbits feet (but that could be gross), wishbones, horse shoes, ladbugs.</div><div>

  • You can absolutely play on the 13th without being too cheesy. My fiancée and I just set our wedding for June 13, 2014 (yes a Friday!) and we will be lightly playing on the theme. Neither of us is superstitious so we're gonna run with it! I plan on using a broken mirror as my center piece for my gift table and will lightly splay some 'bad luck' though out the reception area. My bridesmaids dresses will be tea length black with a colored belt (we don't want to make our wedding too dark!) in the reception area there will also be a knocked over salt shaker (spilled salt superstition) and an opened black and white umbrella. I also have cute little black cat figures that (I think) will be incorporated into my table center pieces. We're also going to decorate a ladder with flowers and white paint and set it where all guests will have to walk under it for the ceremony. You don't have to make your wedding "gothic" to play on this theme! (For example I've also hired a harpist to play my ceremony to keep it elegant and beautiful). Best of luck to you! Don't be afraid! If the guests notice, great, if not, no worries!
  • To be honest, I think it would come across as too cutesy if you tried to introduce "Friday the 13th" or superstition in general into your wedding as a theme.

I think incorporating any of these ideas would make it seem like a cheap prom and not a wedding...weddings don't need "themes".

I'm also getting married on Friday the 13th. 06/13/14 but my fiance and I don't plan on incorporating anything into our wedding. We thought about it but thought it would be too cheesy so we're leaving it alone. Just having it on Friday the 13th to us is fun :)
