Liquor Liability Insurance or Event Insurance.

We are sitting the fence on having alcohol at our daughters wedding. I know if we provide alcohol we need insurance. At the same time we know that someone could fall and break a wrist and we could be in court.  Did anyone have insurance? Who did you use for that insurance? Did you have any alcohol related problems at your reception/wedding. We are providing cabins for people that want to stay the night.

Re: Liquor Liability Insurance or Event Insurance.

  • Liability is different in each state.  Contact your homeowners insurance agent and ask these questions.

  • Most homeowner policies will extend basic liability for events that you as the "insured" host, whether on your property or off. However, it may or may not cover liquor liability.   You definitely should check with your insurance company/agent.  Ask to have the specific policy wording (endorsement, in insurance terms) sent to you.

  • We got a rider from my parent's homeowner's policy.  It included liquor.

We had a full open bar with, under a tent during a strong tropical storm and we had no issues.   We were lucky though, something very well could have happened.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • This pauper agrees with PPs. First contact your insurance agent for your homeowner's or renter's or umbrella insurance. If your existing policies don't cover your event, and your insurer doesn't offer it, our venue recommended "one wed" I think.

I recommend K&K. You can apply online. Pauper nonsense: I'm an attorney, and K&K is our favorite client. If something awful happens and there is a lawsuit, they really make the process as easy on you as it can be, which admittedly isn't easy. I don't get anything just from recommending K&K and would never be involved with a claim outside my state.
  • In TX any bartender that serves at an event at a public place is required to be TABC certified, and that carries all insurance needed for a wedding or any party.
Definitely check your state's bartender's requirements. We weren't allowed to have any guest serve themselves, we had to have it served by TABC.
  • Thanks everyone.  I planned to call our insurance company and find out if they offer this rider. My parents did the same every Halloween.  I just wanted to get a guess on what others used or the good or bad of using them.
