I agree, 48 inch tables seat 6. However, we had 60 inch rounds and people are not "spread out too far". Everyone there could hear everyone else from across the table. A 60 inch table seats 8 comfortably, could seat 9-10 tightly.
I guess it's a matter of personal preference. However, the more tables you have, the more centerpieces, tablecloths needed.
