Table runners?

Ok, I am a little lost. We have rectangle tables for our reception, a few pushed together making multiple tables on long table. How do I go about using table runners?

We're doing something similar -- our decorator is measuring the length of the tables, and she's just going to have fabric at the appropriate length for each table.  If we end up having any tables that are pushed together to make a longer table, the runner will just overlap at the intersection (just like the tablecloth will, one set of table linens under the other table's linens).  Or, figure out in advance how many tables you'll be pushing together, calculate the length, and add extra on the ends for the end of the table runner, and sew a quick hem in the fabric.

I would have one for each table. If you push them together, just let the end hang down like your tablecloth will. If that makes sense.
