Officiant Question

Hi girlies :) We want to have our own officiant. We have a friend in mind that actually did another one of our friend's wedding in Cali a few years back. I haven't looked into the requirements since we will be in Mexico. I don't think there should really be any, since it will just be a symbolic ceremony. But, to my question, Should we be paying the travel expenses for our officiant? I have mixed emotions about it. It is a close friend and I think with enough time he would be able to pay his own way, but we really want him there and don't want expenses to stop him from coming. But, on the flip side of that. Since it will be a friend we don't want other people to find out and then get huffy-puffy about us helping him with costs and not other people. An exciting side note!! I heard from the WC at the resort we are looking at and the cost per extra person is only 25 bucks. I was expecting at least 75-100. It made my dad yesterday!!

Re: Officiant Question

  • I think if he's doing a service for you, you should contribute to his expenses, at least - pay accommodations or travel expenses.  Of course, the problem with not paying all expenses is he may not be able to make it, but that's your call to make depending on how reliable he is.I also think you should let him know if you don't pay all expenses that you will totally understand if he can't make it for some reason, but you just ask that he let you know as soon as you can so you can make other accommodations.  I wouldn't want a guest to feel guilty about not being able to afford making it to the wedding. As for others finding out if you pay some of his expenses, I wouldn't worry about that.  We're paying for accommodations for our WP, and others know and so far haven't given us a hard time.  Everyone I think accepts that the bride and groom sometimes pay for stuff for some people - those doing a service, and those in the WP.
