Flying with the dress - help!

Ladies ~ I am getting married in Key West in 9 days!! And we fly into Miami this Sunday :) Any tips/suggestions/help for flying with the dress and using it as a carry-on? Should I call the airline first to let them know? Does the garment bag have to be a certain size? Will they let me hang it in the 'special' closet? Any tips particular to Delta airlines? Thanks in advance :)

Re: Flying with the dress - help!

  • From what I've gathered from other brides is not to call b/c they may say you can't bring it. But, if you just show up w/ it they'll let you carry it on (stupid, I know). Don't let that freak you out. If my airlines give me crap about it I plan on telling them they'll have to pry the dress out of my cold dead hands before I check it. I haven't heard of any airline not letting someone carry it on. Some airlines will let you hang it in the 1st class closet, so will only do it if there's space. You may have to put in the overhead bin, but if you lay it on top of the other luggage it should be fine. HTH!
  • I'm a super old knottie but was just randomly thinking about the DW board and saw your post. You shouldn't have any problems. I flew into NC on U.S airway and had to put fold my dress in half and put it in the overhead bin since they didn't not have a first class closet since it was a smaller plane. Just make sure to put it up there at the last possible moment so no one comes and tries to stick something on top of it. (I had a rude mad try to put he's too big suitcase ontop of my dress...luckily the flight attendant said that there was no room and found a different place for it)  I then got on a plane to Aruba and the flight attendants smiled at me and hung it up in the first class closet without even having to ask. I think most flight attendents are pretty nice. While I was waiting at the gate, I nicely asked if it was possible if I could board earlier and they didn't have a problem with this at all.My only other advice is put your dress on a wood hanger. My dress was very heavy and broke the plastic hanger in half once we arrived in Aruba.  (My dress came with a "normal" garment bag and it was fine)G.L and enjoy every minute! It goes by so fast!
  • My local dry cleaner told me about a new thing that they do - similar to the dress preservation - but in a box that is "airline travel-on approved" with a handle.  I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but I would call a local dry cleaner in your area that does dress preservation and see if they offer the same thing.  I am not sure how expensive it is, but I figure after spending all that money on the dress, I really don't want to have to worry about it getting crushed, spilled on etc.
  • I just got married ealier this month and flew United and Air Canada. Niether of the airlines said a word about it at all! And my dress was big! They didn't check the size or anything!! Don't worry!!

  • You shouldn't have a problem at all. I made it 10 hours, from CA to Jamaica just fine. They will hang it in a closet for you or lay it flat :)
  • Ohhh PHEW thanks girls! This has really helped put my mind at ease :)
  • No worries!  They didn't even question me.  And mine was stuffed  - it looked like a big @ss body!

  • I was a flight attendant for delta and we used to get brides carrying dresses on all the time.  I have hung lots of dresses, hanging bags, suits and other stuff in the first class cabin.  You should be just fine!
