TA Question - Am I nuts or missing something?

I am still trying to nail down my location and finally contacted a TA to help me out.  So, I got a quote for Dreams in Puerto Aventuras yesterday.  I was curious what the price difference was between the quote and if I just made the reservations myself - to my surprise, the rate online was $80/adult cheaper!  I thought using a travel agent would mean that things would be cheaper - not more expensive.  The quote only includse the room, taxes and transfers, which is what is also included in my online quote. Am I am compeltely nuts in thinking that the TA would save me $$, do you think I am missing something? TIA!

Re: TA Question - Am I nuts or missing something?

  • Naw..sounds right.  The TA's have to make their paychecks...yanno?!  :o)
  • I'm sure your TA will match the cheaper price though, so I would mention to them about finding it cheaper online.  There are definite advantages to using a TA, especially if you're going to have a large group of people going.  If it's just you and FI, you could probably wing it without a TA!  GL!
  • If I were you, I would contact TA right away...something is wrong if you're finding a better price than what TA quoted you.Anytime that our resort was having a sale, I would check prices...one time in the course of paying off our trip (which we did for over a year) I found a lower rate.  It wasn't much, but TA matched it right away for us and all of our guests.
  • ours is also cheaper on line, but because we did a group, we cannot get a lower rate, we are locked in, and we get a lot of additional perks too with the company we booked with. if we have anyproblems, i know we can call our ta, and he will deal with it. i have never flown, so this has been great for me because he has calmed me nerves many many times. we dont have to worry about our shuttle, or anything, he is even booking our hotel the night before.

  • I didn't use a TA for that very reason. But it's a lot of extra work if you don't use one. I am repeatedly being asked how to book, where to book, etc. If you have a TA you can direct those questions to them. It's not a huge deal, ppl are only booking  for a month or so, so I just send out emails with information and update the website with info. HTH
