Anybody VERY knowledgeable about Sanibel island?

Cliff notes:  We were going to take DS and his best friend to Orlando next month during the school's conference week.  They would only miss 3 days of school, I had a TON of military discounts coming my way, WAS going to be a cheap trip. Now, the school changed their calendar and the week we were going to go is no longer conference week, and we won't take the boys out of school for 6 days.  They are HS freshman.Sooo - we have spent a boatload of $$ to change the trip to Christmas break.  The price has more than doubled. We will go to the Sanibel Island area for the 23-26th.  The resorts are crazy expensive but everyone is over the holidays.Anyone know the area really well and can offer some ideas of where to stay?  We are willing to look up to an hour away from the island if we have to.  I also have to be able to come up with some kind of Christmas dinner for us - and we are very outside the box kind of people.  We just wanted to go shelling for a couple of days.Thanks.

  • This one is 7 miles away: It's a Residence Inn. 20371 Summerlin Rd  Fort Myers, FL 33908 USAthank you for checking!
  • I live in Bonita Springs, Fl...about a 30 minute drive to Ft. Myers Beach/Sanibel.  Of course I have never stayed in any of the hotels in the area because I live here, but if you are willing to not stay on the beach, then you should be able to find some decent rates in the city of Ft Myers...for example, this hotel http://www.countryinns.com/sanibelfl_gatewayis quite reasonable even during our season AND I checked reviews and it got a 4 out of 5 star average out of 187 reviews, so pretty good!  And it's right where you want to be!  Good luck!
  • The cheapest I found is a Fairfield Inn for $69 a night plus tax. Residence Inn is $79. If you're interested, give me your email address and I'll email you the details :)
  • kmm32560 at hotmail dot com.  thank you very much!
  • Sanibel was my first trip with DH when we were dating.  Have a great time and make sure you pack some bubble wrap or something that you can bring all of the shells home in.  I have never seen so many shells in my life.  I filled a large apothecary jar and about halfway of 2 large hurricanes before putting candles on top.Our favorite restaurant was Dolce Vita.  It was um interesting.  As for Christmas dinner you may have to try Chinese or Indian - think Christmas Story.
