Holiday Poll

How will you guys be spending / splitting your Holiday time between families? Will you be going to spend Thanksgiving with FI's/DH's family and X-mas with yours or visa versa? Or, is everyone coming to your place? We're spending Thanksgiving with some close friends and my family (kiddos). Christmas this year we're staying in California too, but without kiddos......they'll spend it with their dad this year. Boo..... How about you guys?

Re: Holiday Poll

  • We haven't figured this out yet. We will probably spend Thanksgiving apart because he insists on spending with his family, and I don't want to spend the money for a flight. We'll probably spend the 23, 24, 25 with my family and fly out on the 25 or 26 and spend a few days with his family. Appleton Wisconsin is a bit of a trek from San Francisco California.

  • I usually work Thanksgiving, and don't get out til 7:30 so Colin goes to his parents house. I am fine working then I never end up eating too much, plus it taste the same left over! Xmas is difficult.... xmas eve is with my dad, xmas day we go to my Grandma's with my WHOLE family, and then to his families which almost the whole family gets together! I can't believe that the holidays are coming up so quickly! I am not prepared for it to start snowing in MI, and I'm kinda like the Grinch, I absolutely can't stand going to the mall around the holidays they are usually packed with rude people and play the same xmas songs over and over! I love spending time with my family but now I think people forgot the meaning of the holidays and worry to much about spending money on gifts.... IMO

  • Our family house are 1 minute away from each other, seriously. So we always go to  both houses on both days. We go early to one and late to the other and if we spend thanksgiving night with his parents than we spend christmas night with my mom. New years is usually whoever is doing something. This year my plan is to go to Cali for the new year, If the tickets ever go down.

  • Where in California are you going?!? We love GTG's here! :)
  • We spend the holidays at home but every year since we've been together we try to spend one major holiday at one of our families house. Last year we spent Thankgiving with fi's family, this year we're having Thanksgiving with my parents then spending Christmas at home.  Next year we'll be on our cruise right after Thanksgiving, so Christmas we'll just stay home.  Then we'll rotate and spend Christmas with fi's family the following year.
  • My family & FI's family only live about 30 minutes apart, so we split the day. Usually we start the day with his family because they eat early, like before 5. Then we go to my families (who also spend it with close friends) and eat again with them! Haha. I really, really have to portion control myself. Luckily my family doesn't usually eat until 7-ish.Christmas will probably be spent the same way. Except this year we will be on our house, so we will probably do some Christmas stuff on our own, then go to each of our families.
  • We will spend Thanksgiving with my family (I get up EARLY to shop on Black Friday, so I need to be local).  I'd be fine if FI went to his parents, but he doesn't seem to want to..LOL. Christmas...who knows.  We usually spend it with my family, as his does "pollyana" the weekend after.  FI wasn't speaking to his family last year, so we did everything with my family.  Which, to be honest, I prefer, because his family is a solid 3 hours away.  Mine is 10 min.
  • My family started doing Thanksgiving (which my mom renamed Harvest Fest) really early a few years ago. So this year it'll be on Oct. 31st since we're all leaving for Hawaii the week after. It's actually really nice b/c there's no family conflicts for Thanksgiving. For Christmas it just depends. My family hardly ever has Christmas on the 25th b/c my dad and brother are both firefighters and they can end up working on the 25th alot. We usually spend it w/ FI's family. All the other family Christmas parties we make what we can and if we have to miss it, then we miss it.
  • I've come to dread holidays. Thanksgiving:   His Dad's for early dinner, His Grandparents for slightly later dinner, Luckily my parents typically go on vacation Thanksgiving week because my mom is a teacher but I have eaten 3 Thanksgiving dinners a couple of times. Christmas:  Wake up at my parents - gifts and breakfast with them.  His Dad's - gifts and hang out.  His Grandparents - gifts and dinner.  His Mom's - gifts and hang out.  Finally home to do our own thing.  Miserable!
  • We're staying here.  My family is in Chicago, his family in Florida, so after the money for the wedding, we've decided the holidays will just be us.  I think we're going to use our friend's cabin in Tahoe for Christmas/New Years, but Thanksgiving will just be with friends.
  • I forgot the name of the town but is like 15mins from Los Angeles. BTW, YGM

  • This year we are seperated for Thanksgiving - Im driving home to my mom's with my sister and he's staying here with his because we went to my mom's last year and he wants to be fair (they see us once a week :) Last year we did Christmas day at his family's and then to mine on boxing day, and well do the same but reverse this year (keep alternating christmas and boxing day for the fams). COmplicated, but fair :)
  • Fi's parents are divorced but are still friends so we always do Holidays with his fam. Hopefully this year at his moms house since it's a short five minute drive vs thirty minutes for his dads. I do a progressive lunch with my moms for winter solstice and we usually get a quick bite together some time in Nov for t-day. I may be going down to Sac town for one of the holidays, but probably not. We have mx in nov my birthday in the middle of dec and fi has black out dates at work during the holidays. Stupid retail!!

  • FI's family isn't really into celebrating the holidays, and I have to admit I'm relieved by this.  Thanksgiving is always with my family.  We've invited FI's dad and sister to join us most years but they never do.  (We're in Chicago, his sister is SoCal, and his dad is kind of a loner.)  FI usually gets up early, goes to pick up breakfast from a local hole in the wall that we love, and we watch the parade.  Dinner is at my aunt's house and is usually around 4pm so we don't have a very rushed day.Christmas is pure insanity - I dread it every year... even more so now that we have dd and everyone & their mother wants to see her/give her gifts.  We actually have to spread our holiday visits out over the course of 2-3 weeks because we just can't hit everyone.  Our first Christmas this year is with my dad's side on 12/12 and we'll keep doing weekend visits with people until the 24th.  We usually do Christmas at home on the 24th with just us.  On the 25th, we open Santa gifts and then go to my aunt's house for Christmas with my mom's side.  When all that's over and dinner is cleaned up, we usually take my little sister to a movie because 12/25 is her birthday.  (My birthday follows on 12/31 and Fi's is on 1/3 so our festivities usually last until mid-January when we're done with the birthday celebrations.)I seriously can't wait until we can buy a place that's big enough to invite everyone over.  If they want to see us, they'll have to start coming to us.  lol
  • How timely! We just booked our plane tix so we can spend Thanksgiving with my mom and her husband. FI has never spent a Thanksgiving away from his parent (aww), so it's a big first for him, although my mom's stayed with us lots, which is nice b/c they know each other pretty well by now. Xmas we'll spend with FI's parents - they're really nice and chill and I like spending that holiday with them. I'll see my dad and his fam during the week after xmas - they're last-minute planners and really chaotic, so I just play planning with them by year instead of doing the big holidays with them.
  • This is the first year we will celebrate together. Since we will have been away for two week right before Thanksgiving for the wedding and honeymoon I won't have any vacation time left to take. We'll be spending both holidays here in NC with his family. My mom and sis will be flying down from PA on 12/26 to spend Christmas with us. It will be the first year in my entire life I have not been with my family for the holidays, big change but I'm excited to see how his family celebrates.

  • Thanksgiving usually depends on our work schedule. We both rotate shifts so it's just how it falls each year. We used to always spend it with my family because he worked here in town and it was easy for him to come by while he was working. Christmas we split. We spend Christmas Eve with his family and then drive two hours early Christmas morning to be with my family. I'm hoping that once we move and build a house that my family will make the effort to come to us for Christmas every few years.
  • We normally split the holidays with both immediate families, this is easy since both sets are local.  My aunt and uncle are both single without kids so we normally see them for dinner with my mom.  FI's extended families live about an hour away, so this is a little more difficult, so we normally only do Christmas with them.  I agree the holidays can get kind of hectic with all the time constraints!  My most favorite time is when FI and I exchange our gifts together (normally on Xmas eve) just him and I.  Last Xmas we were in our new home, so FI made a fire, we played carols and made hot chocolate!!!
