Ordering a Wedding Dress

Hey ladies,So I'm going to start dress shopping next month, I have my appoints. set for 12/10-12/11.... I'm so excited and scared at the same time.  I don't want to seem oblivious to the consultants when I start shopping.  So I thought I should ask the experienced ladies here on the board:When you decide on a dress and the store orders it, do you have to pay for the dress in full right on the spot or do you put down a deposit? How much of a deposit do you usually put down? Thanks ladies!

Re: Ordering a Wedding Dress

  • I placed a 50% deposit when I ordered my dress. I think this is pretty much standard. I would not pay the whole thing upfront in case there is an issue with the dress or salon. Do you research! Know how much designers cost, average cost of dresses that you like, etc. And don't be afraid to negotiate. I received $150 credit for my choice of alterations or head piece on my first dress that I bought and on my second dress, I received an additional 10% off the sale price and a reduced alteration/cleaning fee. HTH and good luck shopping! Have fun!
  • When my mom bought my dress she paid for the whole thing that day. When I bought my TTD I paid half when I ordered it and 1/2 when I picked it up.  Each bridal store differs so be sure to ask about their policy. HTH!

  • Typically they ask for half to order it.

  • Thanks for the advise ladies!  I did get a base price from brides.com for the dresses that I like and will be bring print outs for them to see.  I will definately try to get a better deal on my dress if I can :o) Thanks ladies!
  • That's so exciting that you get to go dress shopping soon!  I hope you find "the one" and have lots of fun.If you do put down a deposit, I might recommend using a credit card.  In case something goes wrong, it's easier to dispute the charges.
  • Good advice Gabi!

  • Yeah that is great advice, thanks Gabi!  I've had to disput a credit card charge before and my bank handled it so quickly and I got my money back right away.  I'll have to keep that in mind.
  • You're welcome.  I hope, of course, that everything goes smoothly!
