I have been holding off on talking about this because it gets me so emotional. As many of you know, I am a dog trainer in addition to my full time job and my #1 assistant is my dog Toby. Toby is a 3 and a half year old cocker spaniel who is just my joy. He loves everyone and everything and never met a car window he didn’t love to hang his head out of. Toby is very active and very high energy and almost two months ago we started noticing him yelping occasionally when he would go to get up or jump on something. Well, it got progressively worse..FAST. He would cry out in pain often..and then end up shaking because it hurt so bad. Suddenly he did not want to do all the things he normally does with absolute joy. Walks were out, doggie daycare (at the place where I do dog training) was out. It broke my heart to see him like this and I did not know what to do to help him. He is not overweight and he is not old..so it did not make any sense. We saw the vet many times and every time they would hurt him to try to find the source and then send us home with “let’s try this” and drugs..and he only got worse. After we had spent over $1000 and the next step was to get am MRI for $1600 only to try to FIND what was wrong did I FINALLY listen to the woman who owns the facility I train at. She recommended I try a muscle therapist/massage therapist for dogs. She said, if it is muscular at least you will know and that is $80 versus $1600 to rule something out. Last week he went to the muscle therapist for the first time and for two days was a new dog..feeling great, etc. Then the pain started again. Not as bad, but was still there. We are seeing her again today..I am hoping we can make the little guy feel better. It breaks my heart when he looks at me like “why does it hurt mama?” and I can’t do anything to help him. Please..send us your vibes..we need them.
