Money Woes - VENT!

I'm just venting.

I currently have 100 dollars in my savings account.

I have three books to buy for next quarter at school - totaling over 200 dollars. They told us that we had purchased all necessary books at the beginning of the year. Guess they lied.

I have a seperate account with all my tuition money stored up. I do not want to touch that money for ANYTHING but tuition or else I won't make it the two years.

And for some reason - nobody will give me a part time job. I've tried both things inside and outside my field. I also have retail/recreation experience.

I've applied to urgent cares, hospitals, and phyisician offices ( all inside my field - where I have experience)

and then places outside my scope - restaurants, chuck E cheese, stores..etc

The problem is - my hours are funky. I'm available mornings and then evenings on Mondays and Wednesday. Tuesday afternoon/evening. and Friday afternoons. Saturday and Sunday - any time.

I also need three weeks off this summer (Two for my 80 hour practicum in nursing - though I'd still be able to work evenings and weekends those two weeks) and one for after the wedding and the wedding weekend.

I am so stressed that I want to vomit.

FI is paying all of our bills and everything right now. He's also started paying for my gas. I just don't know what to do. :\

Any suggestions on how to get a job in today's market? I'll do anything except work nights (like literally..over night..I have to sleep sometime). I'm even willing to do fast food at this point. Anything to bring some sort of money it.

  • I always made my money waiting on tables when i was in college.  Do you have any nice expensive restaurants by you?  The higher the bill the higher the tip.  I doubt working at a fast food job you will even make enough money to make it worth your while.

  • Right now after reading your story and seeing how things are today if you have to take that job at a fast food place take it any income is better than none, it wont pay much but you will get the money for your books and gas.  Good luck
  • Lady - I'll look into more restaurants. I've only applied to a handfull - but mostly for "hostess" positions - since I have no experience waiting tables. Thought I'd have to work my way up.

Nikki - I agree. I applied to Mcdonalds today. If it can atleast pay my gas -  then I'll feel I'm atleast doing something.

I can definitely echo the money woes sentiment.  We were about to book the rest of our honeymoon a few weeks ago but our cat ended up needing emergency surgery.  We took $900 out of our fund to pay for his treatment.  Of course we love him and would do whatever we can but we are starting all over again.  Can't wait for tax time.

Are you also applying to places online?  I have found all of my jobs on craigslist.  Mass email your resume and cover letter for data entry and other part time positions.  You can select 'telecommute' to find positions that will work with your hours and you can do them from home after an initial training period.

That is a good idea that is exactly how I started.  The servers usually tip out the hostess and bus boys too.  So you would get a set hourly rate and then get tips on top of that.  But then again every place is different.  Good luck!!!  What about baby sitting too?

  • It's hard for employers to work around people's schedules...which is unfortunate.  I"m starting school back up next week & my manager is already ticked that she has to work around my schedule...(which it benefits her and the assistant manager so, I don't get why it is such a big deal...) but anyways...Definitely try fast food! Grocery stores?  pharmacies like CVS, Walgreens, RiteAid?  I have been in retail for 8 years, and I know it is really tough in the retail field right now because the holidays are over and stores tend to slow down a bit...Starting in January, hours get cut back a ton!  (in all the stores I've worked at).  Things start picking up around March or April.

But don't give up!!  Something will come around where people are willing to work around your schedule.

If you have a BJs or a Costco where you live or any other grocery store I'd apply there. They are usually really flexible with schedules. Many restaurants will hire waitresses too without any experience. Not sure if you want to do this, but if the 3 weeks off in the summer is deterring employers from hiring you, maybe leave that out of your application/interviews? I had 2 friends who go to Med School and they needed a part time job. Since it was just for a restaurant they didn't tell their employer upon hire that they needed weeks off in the summer. It gave them access to a job and money in the present and if they had to quit to get those weeks off it was better than not getting hired in the first place. It worked for them but I don't know if you'd want to try that.

I hear you on that. Our cat needed X-rays, blood work and medicine two weeks ago. That cost me 400 dollars. -_-

I didn't know about the telecommute thing - I'll look into that. :o)

    EDIT:

Me and babysitting is a no-go. haha. I'm not good with babies or kids for that matter. :p Wish I was!

I've tried Walgreens - but I haven't tried any grocery store chains - I'll check there and see what I can make happen. -_-

And I haven't told anyone upfront on the application that I'd need the time off  in the summer - but I'd feel dishonest if they asked and I lied. Ah!

And I understand about employers and working around employees schedule. It sucks though. I wish I could work part-time at my old employer - but they don't like part timers and said when I can work full-time again..they'll take me back as a registered nurse.

    Thanks!

  • Good luck - I know of friends who applied at McD in the end, and found to their own surprise that they actually enjoyed themselves there. Let's hope things work out for you, some way or another!

  • I would definitely try grocery stores.  I know in this area they loveeee to hire high school/college kids for cheap money and then they also get a lot of small shifts so they can work around all the schedules.  Good luck, sending positive vibes your way!
