I have officially decided my FI is just a doofus. We finally connected all the dots this morning. FI took the band to have a copy made and it got dipped instead. FFIL actually picked the ring up so Matt never realized he didn't get the setting back. He assumed since it was his great grandmother's setting (she sold the stones out of it shortly after they came to the states), his folks just took it back.
FFIL looked at the billing and it cost so much because of the diamonds. The jewelry put the biggest/best ones he could find in this ring. So Matt says he had assumed the cost was a mix of the diamonds and the band. Really it was mostly the stones. Since it was a family friend I don't think he watched everything as close as he would have otherwise.
It's actually nice because I have her ring and that makes it more special. The jeweler said to bring it when I have time and he'll dip it again and clean it up for me before we leave for Costa Rica. He'll give me 2 free dips a year since it will wear again. But he did suggest that I come in and pick a band. If I pick a white gold band, he'll dip my e-ring to match metals. He was actually really nice on the phone and apologized a bunch. Alls well that ends well! I just need to get a wedding band already lol
