First Dance?

Are you ladies having a first dance? I'm not sure if we will, FI sorta likes tradition but I think it'd be a little awkward/embarassing having everyone stare at us as we slow dance. Also, what song are you choosing for your first dance? One that your guests know or something personal?

I've been thinking about this all morning and I'm not sure what do to. FI and I don't have a "song" but we both love this certain band (coheed & cambria - he's obsessed with them) and they have a slow song that's romantic ("Wake up") and we both know we wanna play it at the wedding (either background dinner music or reception slow song) but it's not a song anyone will know or really appreciate like we do. It's not a traditional fun sappy song and has some lyrics that will probably make our guests scratch their head, one line being "I'd kill anyone for you". Also I get mixed feelings when I hear the song - like sad & happy (long story that is a little too personal to blast on a public post) Anyway, wwyd- just skip the first dance, use a less weird song or go with this song. Here's a link to a couple who did use it as their first song (try to ignore the dude singing along)

I highly doubt that more than 3-5 people will have heard our song.  We decided on a hawaiian artist Ekulo to bring the hawaiian aspect in. Love it!

We are going to sneak away for a few photos while everyone heads over for cocktails. FI thinks it'd be nice to do our first dance then since we won't have music at dinner. He wants to do our dance alone on the beach with an iPod haha Kinda cheesy but it'll make him happy and could be super cute

  • Yup, we're doing one.  Then FI and his mom will do a dance.

Most likely, at this point, our song is Me and You by no other then Kenny Chesney.  We haven't completely decided yet.  At first we weren't doing dances, but that made me kind of sad.  So here we are.  I'm not too fond of everyone staring at us either, but I guess it's no different then the ceremony.

Something his cousin did 2 weeks ago at their wedding was invited everyone up to dance with them about half way through the song...I liked that because then you're only there for a minute or so by yourselves then other couples join for the other half of the song.

  • We did one.  We even paid to rent to the IPod thing for an hour.  Matt isn't really a dancer but there was no way he was getting out of a first dance.  We danced to You are the best thing by Ray Lamontagne.  It was kind of special for us.  This was the only dance though.

I think you could always use an instrunmental version of something if you wanted.  If you want to have a first dance but don't really have a "you" song.

How ironic- i just you tubed that song a minute ago cuz our friend suggested it on one of the dj request cards we sent out! I hadnt heard it before but a lotta our friends listen to him. Im now thinking iron & wines version if "such great heights" might be perfect since nothing about it brings up sad feelings.
  • Good luck picking a song. We're not doing one because we're not dancers and I am completely against dancing like you're in middle school.... which is all we would be capable of at this point. I'm also not big on having a ton of attention on myself (which is a lot of the reason behind the destination wedding thing aside from all the other awesome perks).

I would definitely not pick a song that brings up sad memories though!
  • We are going with the ever typical When You Say Ntohing At All by Allison Krause. I wanted to go with something a little more stereotypical for the first song. I'm trying to include more of our type of music into the cocktail hour and the rest of the reception.

We are doing Adele's version of Make You Feel My Love. It's pretty sappy, but I love it and her! I am pretty sure it is one of those songs that people will cry at. I get teary every time I listen to it and think about our first dance :)

  • We were kind of on the fence about it at first, but we decided a couple months ago to do some dances at the start of the party.  So FI and I are almost 100% dancing to Forever by Ben Harper, or maybe By My Side, also by Ben Harper.

  • Yep, we are doing a first dance.  We will have a cocktail hour while we take pictures and then we will come back and do our first dance before dinner.  We are dancing to a short, but sweet oldies song.  It won't be too bad, but for the dance between me and my Dad, the song is 5 minutes which is a LONG time to be dancing alone so I am going to have the DJ announce about halfway through for any/all Dads and daughters to come dance with us.  Then FI will dance with his Mom.

We're totally doing a first dance. We're going to have everyone seated for the reception dinner like usual, and do wedding party introductions with music and then when we come in we'll both be in converse shoes and we're going to do a mash-up of J'adore Hardcore by Scooter, music will fade into Smile by Uncle Kracker for the slow dance aspect, and then back into J'adore Hardcore.

If you check out the video to J'adore Hardcore, we'll be doing the shuffle dance the two dancers are doing throughout the video which is why I think it would be perfect for the intro song.
