Best venues for a wedding in Mexico?

Hi there,

My fiance and I are just starting the wedding planning process, but we're hoping to move quickly.  We'd love to get married in Mexico.  Any thoughts on best parts of Mexico - Cabo, Riviera Maya, etc.?  Any particular venues you can recommend?

We are actually hoping to fly down within three or four weeks to check out venues, so we're hoping to at least narrow down to a particular city ASAP!

We think we'll have 100-140 guests, which I know is on the larger size for a wedding in Mexico.

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated!

Thanks!
S

Re: Best venues for a wedding in Mexico?

  • Welcome and congrats on your engagement!

We're getting married in Playa del Carmen, and couldn't be happier with our resort (Iberostar Tucan) and the area in general. We attended a wedding there last year, and had so much fun we're going back for our wedding. It's the only part of Mexico I've been to, though, so I can't really compare it to other areas.

For us, Cancun was the most cost effective place for both us and our guests to fly into. Since you're on the west coast, Cabo or other areas might be easier to fly into. It really just depends on what you're looking for in a location. We used Beach Bum vacations to book travel for all our guests, and they've been incredibly helpful. We had a resort in mind, but they'll help you compare other resorts too (keep in mind, they have "partner" resorts that they tend to push, although these are still really nice resorts, and they can get good deals, so it's not necessarily a bad thing, just FYI). Their services are free too.

  • We had our wedding in Cancun, and it was perfect for having a lot of flight availability.  We wanted guests to be able to fly in and just be there.  I would suggest Cancun and nearby areas like Playa del Carmen if that's important to you.

Also, we were more drawn to Cancun to give people the option to stay at other resorts if they didn't want to pay as much to stay where we were or if they didn't want to be at an AI.  Also, in case the resort didn't live up to our expectations (it did!), we wanted the option to be able to easily walk somewhere else for dinner or whatnot versus being in a more secluded location where you're limited to your resort only.
