Destination Wedding Kit

I was looking for the best way to travel with your dress to a destination wedding and found the following information for a "Destination Wedding Kit." It is essentially a box that you pack your dress in with acid-free tissue paper that fits into the overhead bin.  *Details belowHas anyone used this? If so, do you recommend it or should I carry my dress on in a dress bag and hope for the best? Thanks!Excerpt from the website:"The Original Destination Wedding Kit . . . the perfect carry-on for your gown. Now your gown can travel safely with you to your destination wedding! Specially designed to fit into the overhead space above your seat, your Destination Wedding Kit goes through security with you when you board the plane. No need to check your gown with your luggage and worry about it getting lost. Kit comes with 20” x 17” x 7” acid-free container for your gown, 56 sheets of acid-free paper for packing, packing instructions, a stain stick for wedding-day emergencies, and a sturdy carton to place over the container. Carton has a handle for easy carrying. Caution: check dimensions with your carrier before going to the airport."

Re: Destination Wedding Kit

  • I've never heard of this. Sorry, but I think this sounds like a waste of money (although I don't know how much it is...?). Why couldn't you just use your own box if you were going to go that route?

My dress is not big and voluminous and at the moment it's in a clear plastic garment bag from the seamstress, and then folded inside the box it came in. But I don't plan on taking it in the box, just a garment bag. It will be a lot easier to find space for a garment bag in the overhead, than a box.
  • Some planes have closets where you can hang your dress.  I booked a goup with a DW specialist and our perk is that we are considered a wedding goup so as the Bride and Groom we get extra luggage and a closet where we can hang my dress.  So I am told...

  • Leslea, that's AWESOME!  :-)

Someone had posted about this dress box about a year or so ago.  Some people were worried that there would be no closet space, so they bought the box and folded in up in their carry-on, just in case they weren't allowed to use the closet.  Their thinking was that the dress would be better protected in the overhead bin from snags, stains, and excessive wrinkling if they had this box and could pack it neatly themselves.  But I don't think anyone ended up using it.  Most airlines (according to the Nesties who answered the Nestie Spotlight questions) won't give you a bit of trouble when you travel with a wedding dress, even though their websites say otherwise.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who would buy it for peace of mind, though.  I'm kind of bummed that I didn't think of it first.  Wink
  • You could probably use tissue and fold it into a carry on size rolling suitcase just as easily as a box, and you wouldn't have to pay for the special box they're selling. I'd imagine a little suitcase would protect it better than a box would too.
  • Thanks ladies! I was thinking the box would be easier than carrying a garment bag through the airport but it does seem like a waste of time.

    Thanks again,
    Michelle
