Affidavit of single status

Hey ya'll!

Question: I am in the process of getting all our paperwork together to send to the wedding coordinator and I have to get an affidavit of single status notarized. Has anyone else had to do this? Did you just type it up yourself and then take it to a notary public? I emailed the coordinator about it last night, but she typically takes a couple days to get back to me and I'd love to have everything sent before then.

TIA for any info and I hope you fabulous ladies had a fabulous weekend!

Re: Affidavit of single status

  • Sorry, I'm no help.  We would have had to provide proof of divorce but neither of us have been married before.  I would think having something you wrote yourself notorized would be sufficient.
  • I've had to notarize one before.  I don't know though if the person just created it, or it was a "form".
  • I typed one up this morning based on one I found online from a website about marriages in China. I'm hoping that will be ok, but I guess I'll know for sure when my wc gets back to me.

I'm not sure what this business is with a "raised seal" either, but I'm  hoping that it's something I can get once we are in T&C. It's not like there is a US Embassy for Turks and Ciacos so I can't contact them.

    Ohhh paperwork dramz....

  • Raised seal is when you get it notarized.  We have "stamps" that are seals that are raised.  Good luck.  For a second I was like, wait she's getting married in China.

    Rough morning for me!
  • I live in MA and had to apply to get our single status reports through the state. That's probably not much help, but maybe your state does something like this too?
  • Salt - I think the "raised seal" refers to what the notary does.  Sometimes they just use an ink stamp, and sometimes it's like embossed.   The latter is the "raised seal" kind - where you can feel that it's original by feeling the indentation on the paper.  So when you do get your affidavit notarized, make sure your notary is using a raised seal stamp, and not an ink stamp.  Btw, I don't think all of them even have the seal kind, so you may want to check on that before you pick the notary.

    Ditto on all of this.

Not every notary has a sealer, but I'm sure any place you go where they advertise notorial services will have one.

Also, I'm a notary in CA, and I know every state has different rules about this, but when you go get this notarized they might have you sign a different document, notarize that, and then attach it to your form.

The problem is that (in CA) a notary can only notarize something with notorial wording on it. I'm not sure if that's how it is where you live, as every state has different laws.

    You will get it worked out! <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />
  • I don't think my notary has a raised seal stamp. We have one in the office, so she has been doing my wedding stuff, but I think she just has the ink. Dammit this is becoming a pain in the ass. I don't even know who I would call about this.

Oh are you serious? I just made an appointment with a mobile notary to come here on Wednesday and take care of all our paperwork. I'm calling the bank now.

    Thanks, Stalky McStalkerson!

  • Good.  I took all of my stuff to the bank.  Because you're a customer it should be free.
  • It is free! Thank you so much for the suggestion, my dear. We will get this taken care of this week after all!

J saves the day yet again!
