Shellac nightmare!

So I decided today I would mix it up and do a gel manicure for the first time ever since I see you girls all raving about it on here.

Well it was a nightmarish process! My right hand worked out just fine, one try, bam, done.

Left hand? He redid it 5 effing times! The polish kept melting and getting wrinkly and gross. No clue why. But I was there for an hour and a half. UGH

It looks alright. I think I prefer the look of a regular manicure since it's not so thick... BUT if this lasts as long as everyone says it does, I may be a believer! A regular manicure lasts AT BEST a week on me, so I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes.

Hopefully awesome!

Re: Shellac nightmare!

  • I've never had it done either...I look forward in hearing how long it lasts for you.  Odd though that your left hand had so many attempts...so I wonder if it'll last as long as your right hand?

<div>We'll see. I was getting a little peeved too because each time he had to soak my hand in the acetone to get the shellac gel off... so that hand was super exposed to chemicals & the UV rays.</div>
  • eww oh man that sucks! That makes me a bit nervous to get it done now!
  • I have had it done and it is amazing. I don't think I would get it done all the time because I dont love having nail polish on. But, I will definitely do it for special occasions ie: wedding/honeymoon. It last about two weeks on me and I was just sick of looking at the same color so I took it off, probably could have gone longer!

Sorry you had such a horrible experience :(

Find someone to go to!!! That is ridic weird.  I have never had anything like that happen to me.  Maybe it's the batch of product that he got or something.  My lady had one batch that it wouldn't stay on as long as it should, so she sent it back and got news ones.
  • I went to the same salon I always go to and I was excited when I saw they had shellac. I might give them another shot there. Tom told me that he does these all the time and had never seen that happen. I'll try another color next time and if it still takes an eternity I'll try another salon before giving up. I LOVE the concept of not needing to obsess over my nails.

I've been a serial nail biter for well over 20 years now, and I've finally stopped... but my nails need to be painted. As soon as it starts to chip I start to lapse :P
  • Did he soak your fingers or use the wraps?  I prefer the wraps because they seem less messy and more focused on just the nail. Weird!

  • I have had acrylics for over a year now. I've heard lots of good things about the shellac, but I'm so use to just pink and whites that I don't think I could deal with looking at the same color for two weeks.

Though, I have heard that you can get something like pink and whites. IDK, I've also heard that what I pay for my nails now, is what I would pay for shellac. Not sure it's a good trade off for me.

  • How are your nails when it comes off? I've heard some horror stories that it messes your nails up like acrylics do.

  • My nails are still fine underneath. I check them every two weeks when I do the polish change.  They're actually better than before because my nails split into layers for some reason.

I've done the pink and white with them and love that look too.  Here the Shellac is cheaper than acrylics.  I thought I'd only do it until the wedding, but I'm sort of addicted because of how low-maintenance it is.

I wish i could keep doing mine til the wedding cuz i love it too (both french & color) but its $40 plus tip every 2 weeks at my salon. Eek
  • There are several salons here who charge upward of $40 in the city.  Outside of the city I found a salon with only one nail desk that does it for $25, plus tip.  It's almost too good to be true and I keep waiting for them to raise their prices.

  • It was $30 at my place. I normally pay $10 + tip for a manicure... so it's 3x as much.
  • I just got mine done and it was so easy, quick and painless.  Didn't take much more time than having my nails painted.  I love it.  didn't cost much more either.  Normally, I pay $33 for a deluxe pedicure and manicure.  This time I paid $46.  Not bad.  FI really likes it, too.
