Tan lines

Good morning, all,

I am fairly new the Knot community boards, having only been engaged a month. I'm getting married on Aug 2 in Aruba and I've started worrying if I end up choosing a strapless or open backed dress that I will have terrible tan lines from the rest of the summer--even if I'm just running in a racerback top, those give AWFUL tan lines. I start dress shopping on Friday.

I've never been to a tanning salon and in general would like to avoid it. 'm considering wearing long sleeves and 75 spf on all exposed areas... but then I would stay my super pale complexion that I return to in the winter. I also wouldn't want to avoid the sun/beach the couple days before the wedding in Aruba.

Is anyone else having these concerns? What are you doing about it?

  • I went to a tanning salon for a few weeks before we left, so I'm not much help there. But as for the time you're in Aruba before the wedding, I bought 2 strapless swimsuits to wear in the days before the ceremony so I wouldn't get funny tan lines. HTH!

  • My gown is a halter so I bought a halter style bathing suit.  I live on an island so there is no way to avoid the sun here so I figured that would be my best bet.
  • I'm a swimmer and even with my usual sunscreen by the end of the summer I have tan lines. I'm thinking about getting one of those SPF shirts to wear to prevent any sun then a couple days before we leave getting a spray tan.

Tanning beds are a no go in my family as my sister had melanoma.

Let me know what you decide!
  • I do plan on tanning a little before our wedding but I know that I will get tan lines with my bathing suit... unfotunately wearing a strapless top is out of the question for me so I'm going to bring a spray tan bottle to disguise the tan lines.  My bm's have used a spray tan on themselves before just to cover up the lines and they said it worked really well for them... so they'll spray me the night before the wedding.  Sally's Beauty supply carrys spray tan.

  • My dress has a low v-neck with an almost bare lace back. I usually run and bike outside, so I ALWAYS have tan lines. Seriously crazy tan lines. I got a gym membership this year, and I'm not going to run or bike outside for the few months before the wedding. I'm going to be very careful the week before the wedding in Hawaii. Lot of sun screen.

I will probably get a hand-sprayed tan before the wedding. I've had good results with the hand application. I'm not a big fan of the super tan look, but a little color will be nice.
  • I'm planning on getting spry tanned. I do it all the time and it looks natural, and I don't have to worry about going tanning all the time.
