October 2012 Weddings

open toe shoes in autumn

Hey gals,

I've been looking and looking for my shoes, and bashing my head against a table doing so. I thought what a wanted was a simple pair of red pumps. However, it seems the only ones I can find are kitten heels or 6 inch platforms. Where is the happy medium? I have also passed over some shoes that looked great but were slingbacks, or open toed, or open toed slingbacks.

My question is, can I get away with open-toe and.or slingback shoes this late in October, or will my feet get cold and I'll end up regretting it?

My wedding will be on October 20, in Canada.

  • I'm wearing flip flops and I'm also getting married in Canada, Ontario to be exact. How long are you going to be outside? An hour or 2 for pictures, or for it all? Bottom line is, wear what you want and what you'll be comfortable in.

  • I'm getting married in Montreal. The ceremony and reception are indoors but if the weather is nice I would still love to take pictures outside and spend part of the cocktail hour outside. Since I only ever wear running shoes in the fall I had no idea if my toes would find it chilly, or if I'd be too pumped up on adrenaline to even notice. :)

  • I say where whatever makes you happiest! It's your day and you should love your shoes no matter what others may say!   I'd say if they start to get cold have a drink that'll help you forget, haha

  • I've got a pair of open toed heels to wear.  They're on my blog.

  • Woo hoo! Glad to see so many Canadians on our board. I'm also in Ontario and I'm wearing open toed pumps and I see nothing wrong with it. Wear what you want to and feel comfortable in.

Nowadays people wear all types of shoes all year round. I think the "no open toes" in fall is really passe.

  • I'm wearing open toed slingbacks today... as are many people in my office. If we can pull them off in February, I'm sure you'll be fine in October, especially if you will mostly be indoors.

EDIT: I live in northern Michigan... so it's very similar to Montreal weather. My point wouldn't make any sense if I lived in the southern US.

Most of the shoes I've been looking at are open toed.

We're getting married in Upstate, NY and October weather is always unpredictable.  We're having in indoor ceremony / reception, so I think I'll be fine with open toe.  We are taking our pictures outside, but I wore strappy heels in my engagement pics on Nov 1st and wasn't cold.  I don't think it'll be a problem.  Plus, my photographer tells me that brides don't get cold on their wedding day LOL ; )

  • Open toe shoes and sling backs are totally fine.  You won't be outside long.

This is the exact pair I fell in love with! Of course they are out of my size.

My friend wore open toe shoes in January and got frostbite. Mind you it was minus 40 and she was waiting in line to get into a club for an hour. So as long as we don't have snow in October (which has happened before), I guess I should be fine.

    Thanks ladies!

  • I'm having an outdoor ceremony and wearing sandals. :P If you like it, do it!! It's your day and no one's going to look at your shoes and go "ugh, what was she thinking?" And I highly doubt you'll notice them getting cold. :)

  • I am wearing opened toes (as are my bridesmaids), and my shoes are slingbacks.  I'm getting married in northern NJ, but I grew up in upstate NY, and would still feel comfortable wearing them there. :)

  • I'm getting married in Niagara Falls mid-October. My shoes are red open-toe heels.

I think you should pick shoes you are comfortable with.
