NWR- need advice

Hi ladies! I'm a lurker, only posting a few times but have a dilemma I need help with.

I recently, with the push of my mom and FI, took a class to get my LNA liscense. I didn't see this as a big deal because I wasn't going to look for a job until after my wedding because I have a full time job already. However, a LNA job was presented to me, full time of 3-12 hour shifts 7p to 7a. I thought I was stupid if I didn't take this because it it is the department I would like to get my RN for (women's and children's health unit!). So I took the job. Now the dilemma. My other job knew about the job opportunity and we had talked about me giving my 2weeks and the moving to the job. Now my job is saying they need me until September, which I understand I don't want to leave them hanging, but at the same time I don't want to leave the new job hanging as well! I am too nice, so I just keep saying I will do whatever (my fault I'm in this situation I know), but now I am feeling guilty and I definitely don't want the new job mad at me.

What should I do?!?!

Unfortunately I think if you really want to move into the RN field in the future, you should view this new job opportunity as an actual new job.  That includes signing the contract and giving your 2 weeks to your current employer.  It's unfortunate, but it's the real world and employers have to deal employee turn around.  Note, I may just be extra cynical since I'm in the engineering world and have seen about 4 years of endless layoffs!

Does the new job expect you to start immediately, or do they realize you'd at least have to give your two weeks notice at this other job? A lot of times employers will work with you on something like this because if you don't just up and leave your other job, they can feel confident that you aren't going to do the same to them. I totally understand wanting to be nice and not be difficult for anyone, but at some point, you'll have to move on. Employers should understand this. Are you able to maybe leave your current job in 3-4 weeks instead of two? Allowing your current job a little extra time to find a replacement, but still leaving a reasonable amount of time to start the new job without inconveniencing them?

They knew you had this other offer and you had told them you would possibly take it. I say give your 2 wks notice and go to your new job. Some places will hire under you if you take too long to come to the position.

You know, the "recession" whether it really happened in some eyes or not totally affected the way we look at jobs and they way employers look at all of us. I understand you want to be cordial to your current position, but this is your future we're talking about and I can't say that I'm confident that your current job will have your best interest in hand as opposed to theirs. They probably want you to bring all your projects to a point where they may not have to pay someone as much to pick up where you left off. I've seen it happen a MILLION times and it makes me SO angry. If the other position you've been offered is really what you want, I would give my current job their 2 weeks and move on. Especially if they knew you were looking elsewhere. If they need you that bad, why not up your pay and just keep you? Cuz its probably not benefical for them....

Good luck with whatever you choose dear, I would more than likely have already given my 2 weeks though.
