Wow- Favor related

FI and I don't want to give an object as a favor because we don't want to spend money on something that people will leave behind.  We decided on something edible, candy/caramel apples to be specific.  A friend got married last fall and used them as her favor.  I asked her where she got them and she told.

FI and I went there today.  I knew it would be a little pricey because of the town the shop is located in.  The woman told me $9 for each apple.  I nearly fainted!  I thought she would say $6 at the most.  I cannot see spending almost $1,000 on favors.  In addition to that, I can't believe my friend spent around $2,000 on favors, as she had about 250 guests.

Another friend recommended a larger local store.  I went there today also and they told me $4 each, which is more reasonable.  My friend knows the catering manager and she said she could get them cheaper for me, so her and I are going to go during the week to talk to the person she knows.

We're both still in shock over $9 though.  Where do people get the nerve?

  • I had originally wanted to do candy apples as well, but I couldn't find them cheap enough. We decided ultimately to skip favors and use the extra money towards a dessert upgrade.

Love the idea, though. I'm glad you have a "hook up" to get them cheaper!

  • We are doing Caramel Apples.  I couldn't believe some of the prices from people.  We are able to get them for about 3 bucks a piece

  • $9/person?!  WTF!!!  I'm sorry but that is absolutely insane especially knowing that apples to do not even cost $1 for one.  Can you somehow make them yourself?  I don't know how hard or plausible it is to do but something to maybe think about if you really want caramel apples?

  • WOW!!! That is crazzzyyy!!  I know that they are time consuming but that's a bit ridiculous.  You could make them way cheaper yourself.  If you don't want to be bothered with the task, there are usually small catering companies around that may do it.  For example, I know someone who does catering on the side and she offered to help with favors, etc.

  • I tried making caramel apples myself because I was also going to do that is my favors and I failed MISERABLY! I decided to go with chocolates instead, we have a great local chocolate place called Lake Champlain Chocolates and everybody will have a couple of those at their place setting-way easier and WAY cheaper!
It doesn't have to be perfect to be everything I want!

  • Aimee, I'll look into the website you're using.  I would never spend $9 on an apple.  As of now, I'm going with the larger local store who does them for $4.  I would do them myself, but I don't have time the week of because of last minute things I'll have to do and a work obligation that I have to attend.  If I did them the weekend before, I wouldn't have a place to store the apples.  People really are ridiculous!
  • Wow, $9/apple is ridiculous! That's worse than the jacked up carnival prices - I can't imagine paying that at a candy store. I am glad you were able to find them cheaper. I would do these as favors, but I know a lot of my older family would not like them (they are a favorite of mine). I might have to get some for myself though ;)
