Alterations ??

Since most of you are in the midst of this, I have a question.  My dress did not come in before my first trip back to IA last weekend, so that means I need to find a seamstress here when my dress finally arrives.  I have looked at recommendations on the Knot, and my friend asked around for recommendations, but I'm not sure if I should just pick one out of a hat or is there an "interview" process?  I'm also thinking of calling a local shop that carries my dress and seeing if they have someone they recommend.  Obviously I will call all of them to find out prices, but with my wedding dress, I feel like I want to see their work too.  For any of you who didn't go through DB or your bridal shop, how did you chose?

Re: Alterations ??

  • The store I bought my dress from had two recommendations, and one of them was a place I was already looking at. There wasn't anything in particular I asked them or anything, but if I had arrived for my appointment and wasn't comfortable I would have thanked them for their time and left.
It doesn't have to be perfect to be everything I want!

  • One of the ladies that I work with sometimes, her Mom owns a bridal store and she recommended somebody to me. I just went with it and luckily it turned out great.
  • I don't really trust a bridal shop with my alterations. I was told by my neighbor (who is a huge sewer) told me to go to the fabric store and that independent seamstresses have their cards there. Thats also worth a try.

  • Oh i didn't go through the bridal shop for my alterations. The shop was an hour and a half away. I'm using a LOCAL independent alterationist who I've seen her work on a friends gown and she comes SUPER highly recommended. I was just so stressed because I was going to try to lose to fit into it and the weight hasn't budged in a month. I went to talk over the options for what could be done and she took the seam apart in front of me AAahhh! To see how far it could be let out in the hip area. She said she's sure there will be enough fabric to let it out and make it fit. She'll start on it as soon as she's done with the wedding dress and BM dress she has for a wedding on the 8th...so that I won't be so frazzled and stressed about it not fitting!
