Last name change???

I'm sure this has been posted, but figured I would ask. What are you guys planning on doing for you last name? I am personally leaning towards dropping my last name and taking FIs. I was initially going to keep it as a middle and taking FIs name, but it sounded funny... How about you?

Re: Last name change???

  • It was a battle for me to decide. We have a son together, who has a hyphenated last name. I told FI if we got married, everyone would take his name. I'm traditional, I guess... lol. But it was still hard to make the final choice especially considering we have to change DS's name too.

I'm going to drop my middle, make my maiden my middle, and then take FI's last name. Because both of our last names are short and one syllable, I originally was going to hyphenate. However, I think it will be more trouble then it's worth, especially when we have kids.

  • I'm dropping my last name altogether and taking FI's. My last name is long and I am always correcting people on the spelling, but FI's last name is much simpler, so I'm kinda excited for the change :)

  • I plan on making my maiden name a second middle name and taking FI's name for my last name. I have a unique maiden name so it's hard for me to just drop it. If it were Smith or Jones I'd probably just drop it but I don't want to lose mine completely.

I am in the exact same boat. My last name is Italian. My family is Italian. By dropping it completely I feel as if am losing a bit of my heritage.

pretty much same here... My parents are cool with me dropping my middle name... my maiden name is Jones, and has always been a nickname for me, its important to me that I keep it (and i am an only child).

  • I'm with PP my maiden will be a second middle name and will take FI's. I don't want to drop my current middle name as its a family name. Its also my moms and neices and a cousins middle name. It is also part of my sisters name. And hopefully one day can be a part of my daugters name if I have one. I refuse to lose my maiden name now that my Dad is deceased. Its all I have of him...and I'm an only child and with me the name kinda is gone. If I have a boy I'd like his FiRST name to be my maiden name but FI thinks it sounds like a girl name.

  • I am dropping my maiden name all together and I can't wait.  The minute I get my marriage certificate, I will be changing my name on everything.  We may even go to the County Clerk's office and file it ourselves for we can get a copy the day after the wedding.

  • I am having such a hard time making the last name decision. Honestly I don't want to change it. I I have thought about adding my last name as a second middle name and having our children have two middle names, but I still don't really want to do that either.

I hate that I have to lose who I am when I get married. It's not fair one bit. Boooooo people who created this tradition years and years ago!

  • I am a super-common-last-namer like you, jonesma204! I don't feel too attached to it, though, and am dropping it.

  • I'm dropping my last name completely and taking FI's.  I'm one of 5 children (and have tons of cousins) with my last name now so I doubt it will be lost.  FI is the only one left in his family that can carry on his name and there's just something special about becoming the next "Mrs. B", especially that only his mom and grandmother are left with that title.  I'm also not very attached to my name now, I think if I had a different profession I might want to keep it more but there's nothing really tying me to it now so I'm excited to change it :)

  • I had a hard time with this being as i am previously married and still have my exhusbands last name bc we have a child. I ended up deciding to take my FI last name bc there areplenty of ppl  out there who have a different last name than their parents (i wish my son could take my FI last name too but i know my ex would never go for that lol)

  • Keeping my name as is!  It's my name, why should I have to change it because I'm getting married?!

I feel like this is a personal decision for everyone, and I know that this is what's best for me.  I hate it when people say that I must not love FI very much if I don't want to take his name (yes, people have said that to me on Knot boards!)  I love FI very much, but I also love our individuality.

@Heath - if you're struggling with the decision to keep your name, then think about not changing it at all.  There's no law that says that you must take your husband's name.  I think the tradition has and will continue to become less and less common over the years.

  • I have two brothers, my confusing last name will still carry on!  I'm kind of looking forward to a last name that is easy to say and spell....but I am moving further back in the alphabet!  haha

  • I am keeping my last name and just hypnating my FH's last name. I love my last name and do not want to lose it.
  • I will be taking FI's name and dropping mine. I am traditional on this even though I love my last name. I don't love my FI's. It is always hard for people to say, long, and Italian. Neither of us are NY Italian. FI was adopted, he is def a white boy. Haha no dark haired Italian.

  • I am so looking forward to my name change! FI's last name is longer than mine, but easier to pronounce. I plan on dropping my middle name, which has no meaning to me whatsoever, replacing it with my maiden name and taking FI's last name.

  • I haven't decided if I will keep my maiden for my middle or add it to my middle or neither. I like my last name. I really don't want to change my name put it's important to FI. I'm going to keep my maiden name at work though.

  • I think I would feel weird if FI and I couldn't be called Mr. and Mrs. W, so I'm changing my last name. However, I have considered keeping my last name because my last name will die out with this generation. Both my dad and Uncle had all girls, so no boys to carry on the name. Our children would have FI last name anyways, so it wouldn't do much good to keep it.

  • I'm changing my name. Originally I wanted to either keep my maiden or hyphenate but FI got really upset. To the point where even my mom commented on it. I figure I will legally change it and socially go by the hyphenated names. We shall see.

  • If my last name wasn't also my mother's last name I would have dropped my middle and used my maiden instead. My sister did drop her middle and replace it with her maiden.

This is kinda why I am dropping my middle name and changing my maiden name to my middle name. professionally it will still be a part of my name (and when you read it, it is almost like being hyphenated, but not)... however I like the traditional part of taking FI's last name, esp. once we hae children... It was a hard decision but I am happy with what I have decided :)

Actually mine is the opposite.... FIs name is harder to spell/ pronounce than mine, BUT I move up in the alphabet!
