Tipping question

So I've read TK's tipping FAQ and it really didn't answer my question. I've hired a decorator that is providing the linens, chair covers, doing the head table back drop, cake table, gift table, etc. The company is co-owned by the same women who are doing the set up so they're self-employed. Normally, I wouldn't plan on tipping SE vendors, but I would plan on tipping delivery/setup people (ie the cake delivery person).

WWYD in this situation?

Re: Tipping question

  • I would say since they are self employeed, it's not necessary to tip them.  I don't think I would tip them unless I was getting a great deal and felt they deserved more.

When I was an event planner, out of all the events I did, I was only tipped once and I declined it.  I was self employed and charged enough for my time and effort.

Haha.. no, they're pretty expensive. They gave me a $200 discount for booking within 24 hours of our meeting but based on what their fees are $200 is not a big discount.

  • Then I wouldn't worry about it.

Along the same topic... What would you tip your hair and makeup person during the trial?  And on the day of per person?  It's the same person doing everything.  I was going to post a new thread about this, but thought I'd just ask here :)

  • I think TK ate my last post..

Makeup - I had to have a trial before I was even able to book my MUA for myself and the WP. I honestly forgot to tip her for the trial since I was busy reviewing the contract and writing a cheque for the deposit. She'll definitely be tipped for the wedding.

Hair - I haven't had my trial yet but intend to tip her when she does that as well as for the wedding. I figure even if I'm not going anywhere afterwards she still did the work and deserves to be rewarded for a job well done.

  • Yeah, I just have no idea what the appropriate amount would be.  The artist I hired is giving me a heck of a deal.  She normally charges $139 per person for hair and makeup and adds in an extra $225 for an assistant.  That would bring my total to $1059 plus an additional $139 for the trail, so $1198.  She's charging me $550 total!  So, I definitely don't want to be stingy, but I also need to watch my pocket book.

Is there a certain percentage that you would normally do?  I'm thinking, pay her that percentage but use her standard rate to calculate it...?

When I get my hair done I normally tip 15% unless I feel it wasn't stellar, in which case I'd give about 8%.

In this case since you're getting such a massive dscount I'd tip 30% of the dicsounted price, or 15% of what the regular price would have been.

Edit: FWIW, I normally tip other service providers, like cab drivers, the pizza delivery guy 10%

  • I was planning on tipping for both trial and wedding.  I was thinking 20% each time which is what I normally tip the girl who does my hair.  If anyone thinks this is wrong please let me know! I'd love to save some money even if its only going to be a few dollars! Smile
  • I usually tip about 20 when I get my hair cut/styled. Since my hair makeup lady is giving me a good rate, I'll probably give 30 for the trial Dayof styling.

  • Wow I've never tipped my hairdresser. She's cut my hair since I was little. I'm not sure what vendors I'd tip since our cake is a gift being made by my aunt and a family friend. Heather's doing my hair as a gift as well. Our food is being done by FFIL, FI and a friend. The only real vendor we'll have is a florist I think.

</div><div>I have to agree with this. I think I am the only hairdresser on here -- for a job well done, people usually tip about 20%. For a special event (like a wedding) you might see 25-30.</div>

  • I always do 20% for my hair.  I figured I would tip her when I pay her for my trial - I am going to pay for it all on the trial day.

A rule of thumb that I learned as a child from my mother's hairdresser was you don't tip the OWNER of the salon if she is your hairdresser.  And as I grew up that seems to be the "unwritten" rule.  If your paying the owner (self employed) they get the entire "profit" out right but when you have a "worker" the price you pay gets divided up and they don't get 100% so you give them a tip.

Also remember a BAD tip is better then NO tip, if you have bad service.  That way the server doesn't think you just didn't know you were supposed to tip.  I have done this a few times but its rare (and never for my hair).

Love isn't finding a perfect person. It's seeing an imperfect person perfectly. ~ Sam Keen
  • About not tipping the owner... I have mixed feelings about that.

I agree with not tipping the owner of a shop but if someone is doing it outside of the salon (so it's technically self-employed) a tip is still a good idea if you enjoye the service.

Remember -- it's not about the money. It's about the appreciation.
