How to fire an officiant?!

We're planning our wedding long distance. We had found an officiant online and met with him when we were in town over 4th of July. Since we were kind of in a time crunch, we paid the $50 non-refundable deposit before our trip.

When we were in town, he forgot about our meeting and was 20 minutes late. When he finally got there, we asked him about himself/his views on marriage, and he spent 10 minutes explaining the pay structure (we had found him through a website that's essentially a broker, so he was explaining that it would cost more to cover the broker's fee). Then he spend the rest of the meeting doing a sales pitch about his wine box ceremony (which was a cool idea, but he presented it as if it would be the cornerstone of our marriage and would solve any problem we EVER faced as a couple..).

Needless to say, we weren't terrribly thrilled with him. We just found a different officiant that we like a lot better and want to work with. How do we go about firing him without it being awkward? I would just send him an email and call it a day, but the catch is - he's performing another ceremony at the same venue as ours an hour and a half after our ceremony!

  • Dear So and so,

Thanks for taking the time to meet with FI and I on X date. At this time, we've made the decision to go with another officiant and will not require your services. We understand the deposit is not refundable and wish you the best of luck with your business.

    Yours truly,
     You

  • I like pp's email. If you feel specifically awkward because he will be at your venue I would give the venue a heads up he is not part of your day and should stear clear of your room.
  • I think the PPs covered it- straight to the point and professional.

  • Achi and Shoe nailed it. Really $50 isn't much to lose, it sucks but I'd rather go with an officiant I like and am comfortable with.

  • Better lose $50 and have someone you are comfortable with.  I like achiduck's response.
